In this one day course, we will learn about when and where the stories and legends of mermaids originated, meet different mermaids from countries all around the world, explore the timeline and evolution of the stories told over time to modern day, discuss differences in the types of creatures in stories like sirens and mermaids, and discuss why mermaids may or may not exist. The first portion of the class will cover the origins of mermaid stories and legends and some of the origin stories of mermaids and humanoid sea creatures from all around the world with an activity in which learners build their own mermaid. The second portion of the class will cover various stories, accounts, literature, and legends that led to how we view mermaids today in our entertainment and literature. We will also discuss the reasons of why mermaids might not exist and why they might with an activity in which learners will create a name, background and facts about their mermaid. Hello and welcome! My name is Kaylee Thomas, and I offer classes in the areas of world geography and the continents and countries in them as well as world cultures.
I spent my last year teaching World Cultures and Social Studies to Elementary students while living in Korea. My teaching experience combined, however, includes six months in Australia, Malawi, and Zimbabwe teaching English, culture exchange, stories, and activities to children ages 5-18, and 6 months teaching children ages 5-15 on VIPKid.
I am very passionate about cultivating a drive in young people to want to learn. I believe life should be spent constantly learning and growing, and I intend to instil that passion in the learners in my class. My classes are best for Visual/Auditory learners as I like to provide context for the content I teach and create scenarios that makes the learner put themselves into a situation. This creates a deeper meaning of and resonation with the subject material. Another aspect to learning that I believe is important is to acknowledge curiosities, and encourage deeper thinking about the content and its implications in various scenarios. This also applies to exploring the effect of said content in their own lives.
I love to travel and am currently traveling Europe as a nomad. I'm also a life-long learner with numerous passions and interests, and I am always looking for new ways to grow and learn! I have a cat, Inna, who I love more than anything else, and a younger sister who is my best friend in the world. I also hope to one day travel to every continent (5 down, 2 to go)!
