Women are often overlooked, and frequently underestimated. During this once a week class students will delve into the lives, accomplishments, challenges and celebrations of women who overcame the odds and were able to "get the job done"! Students will discover that women have been overcoming challenges for centuries to make their world a better place.

While we view these women through a 21st century lens where women have a voice and equal rights, the fact that many of these women made their contributions in eras without such rights will be emphasized. The women represented in class will range across all of recorded history and circle the globe, with accomplishments in science, the arts, politics, athletics, civil rights, human rights, exploration, and more! From Hypatia and Cleopatra; to Elizabeth I, Catherine the Great and Florence Nightingale; to Stephanie Kwolek, Mae Jemison, Beyonce and Malala, students will discover who each woman was/is beyond her accomplishments.

The teaching style is an interactive one where slides and/or media is used to present the lesson via lecture, then engaging in interactive activities including using the whiteboard in Zoom, videos, audio recordings, graphic organizers, basic biographical content about each woman will be available in teacher created and/or curriculum from womenshistory.org in handouts provided in advance of each class, role playing via teacher designed escape rooms (for example help Marie Curie with her experiments), and class discussion will comprise the learning time. Students do not need any prior knowledge about the women covered in the course.

Each class will explore the life of each woman, beginning with her early life and background, the experiences that shaped her, and the contribution that she made. Not all of these women have pristine backgrounds. Owning slaves, committing crimes, and violating cultural and/or religious customs are a few of the experiences women covered in this class may share. Some of the women have suffered abuse, sexual assault, mental illness, discrimination, unwilling relocation, servitude, injury, illness, or death that may be difficult for sensitive learners. These topics will be covered briefly, and only when necessary to understand their contribution.

**********PLEASE READ*************
Outschool has recently changed its policy regarding class cancellations. We know how disappointing canceled classes can be for learners, so we too are amending our policy. In the past we have waited for late enrollees, of which we have had MANY! Unfortunately we can no longer do that.

Instead we will evaluate class enrollment for ongoing classes on teach Sunday at 5pm Eastern. IF enrollment falls below 3 students, we will push the class back a week. When other sections are available students will have the option to transfer to another class. Full refunds will be provided for learners who cannot attend the newly scheduled class time. All other refunds will be provided as per the Outschool Limited Refund policy (see below). If for any reason the class does not meet your expectation, you have the confidence of knowing that Outschool has a Happiness Guarantee and will provide a refund upon request via their Customer Support.

Transfer requests within 24 hours of a scheduled class will NOT be approved. At that point it is too late to reschedule the class, and it is unfair to other families who may have enrolled thinking there were multiple learners enrolled. Instead students will be encouraged to watch the video of the class.

Thank you for understanding, and for your loyalty.

I have an extensive background and education covering sensitive content like the atrocities committed during the Holocaust, as well as other genocides, and will handle any similarly sensitive topics without including graphic descriptions or images, and only teaching that which is relevant to the historical contest and contribution of the woman being studied.
Emphasis will be placed upon how they overcame their challenges.
As a National Board Certified Teacher who has been teaching this and similar content for nearly 20 years, I realize that it is important to provide students with a balanced perspective of each woman. Sometimes that includes the "bad and ugly" along with the good and inspirational. These conversations will be held when necessary, and covered in an age appropriate, historic manner.
