Experiencia de clase

All Disney stories take place in a place far, far away, in a time long, long ago... yet, Disney leaves us many clues as to where and when these stories actually take place. The problem is... Disney does a very poor job of showing us the clothes of those places, never mind all of the other fun details that make up historical stories!
This course is 70% social studies and 30% fashion design. We will be delving into historical times and places that coordinate with the clues we can find (and will look at) in 8 Disney movies. We will be discussing how women behaved and were treated during each time period, as well as what was generally going on during the time, and how this may have affected her. We will look at clips of each movie as well as primary and secondary sources to supplement our discussion.
Additionally, students will learn how to "read a dress" to better understand how fashion historians date a dress. Students will synthesize the skills and information into a historically accurate fashion sketch for each princess.

I have been teaching history through Disney for 5 years, and it's basically one of many ways you can decide to organize a survey history course. It's exciting to look at the types of people that many history classes don't look at: women. Though I typically stick to the main "pantheon" of Disney princesses, I'm excited to go outside the norm with this class and talk about the Romani people and more!
