Welcome witches, wizards, and muggles to the Harry Potter Book Club!

In this class we will read the seventh (and final) Harry Potter book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" by J.K. Rowling. This class is perfect for first time Harry Potter readers and for students that want to re-read the series. In this class we will follow along with Harry, Ron, and Hermione on the adventures that await during what would have been their seventh year at Hogwarts! This is a flex class, so there are no live meetings, but we will still be interacting and participating with each other in the classroom! Each week there will be discussion questions posted in the classroom that the students will need to answer after reading the assigned chapters. The discussion questions will help the students to critically think about what they read each week. Through the class discussions the students will work on comprehension skills, character analysis, comparing and contrasting, connections, author's purpose, and much more! The discussions will take place in the Outschool classroom and students are encouraged to respond to their classmate's posts as well as the questions.

In addition to responding to discussion questions in the classroom, students will engage in discussion via other means as well. Each week there will be one FlipGrid discussion. FlipGrid is a unique tool that allows the teacher to record a video and the students to respond with their own videos. The students will be able to see each other's responses and make connections to their classmates that are sometimes difficult to achieve in a flex format. Students will also participate in a poll on Kahoot each week and the poll results will be revealed in a video at the end of the week. Both FlipGrid and Kahoot only require a passcode to participate in and do not require students to make their own accounts.

Each week the students will also have a short writing assignment to submit. They will have a choice of two writing prompts each week and will complete and submit whichever one they prefer. The writing prompts will be based on the reading from that week and students will be encouraged to get creative in their writing. I will provide feedback on student writing each week highlighting what I think they did really well with and giving some tips on how to make their writing even better.

I will explain the writing assignment options each week by video and post them in the classroom. The writing assignments will be sent directly to me and will not be posted publicly in the classroom.

Discussion questions and writing assignments will be posted on Sunday each week and will be due by Saturday. The reading schedule is listed below,

Week 1: Read Chapters 1-6
Week 2: Read Chapters 7-11
Week 3: Read Chapters 12-18
Week 4: Read Chapters 19-24
Week 5: Read Chapters 25-30
Week 6: Read Chapters 31- Epilogue

Orientación para padres
Harry Potter is a much loved children's book series about wizards and magic. The books in this series start out lighthearted but do get a little darker as the series goes on. Later books in the series deal with the bad guys wanting to kill people that don't have "pureblood" and the deaths of some beloved characters. I always recommend that parents read a book first to decide if it is a good fit for their child!
