Would you like some extra practice with the reading comprehension skills you are learning in your class? This class will be providing students a positive, fun and encouraging environment to work on answering common comprehension skills that are taught in the 3rd-5th grade curriculum. This class will contain PowerPoint teacher directed lessons, discussion and activities. Each class will be winter themed. The reading material and activities will contain winter animals, snowmen, etc. PowerPoint or google slides will be shared on the teacher screen during the direct instruction portion of the session. Below is a copy of the course schedule. Please let me know if you have any questions! Looking forward to working with you! Course Schedule Week 1 (Character Traits)- Students will learn how to identify the characters in a fiction text and determine character traits for each character. There will be a teacher-led lesson about character traits through a (I do, We do and You do) format. The lesson will be taught through a PowerPoint presentation in which will be engaging, interactive and will contain visuals. Intro- What are character traits? Examples of character traits will be given. Direct Instruction - The process of how to determine the character traits for a character will be taught through graphic organizers and visuals. (I Do)- I will model how to determine a character trait for a character with a brief snowman fiction text. (We Do)- We will determine a character trait for a character together about a different snowman fiction text. (You Do)- I will read aloud a snowman fiction text. The students will need to draw the characters and write character traits for the character in the snowman. Share snowman and review the skill taught. Week 2 (Comparing and Contrasting Characters)- Students will learn how to compare and contrast 2 different characters in a fiction text. There will be a teacher-led lesson about comparing and contrasting characters through a (I do, We do and You do) format. The lesson will be taught through a PowerPoint presentation in which will be engaging, interactive and will contain visuals. Intro- Compare and Contrast objects. Direct Instruction- The process of how to compare and contrast characters will be taught through graphic organizers and visuals. (I Do)- I will model how to compare and contrast characters with a brief snowstorm fiction text. (We Do)- We will compare and contrast 2 characters together while reading a different fiction text about a snowstorm. (You Do)- I will read aloud a snowstorm fiction text. The students will need to complete the graphic organizer, comparing and contrasting 2 characters and draw each character. Share organizers and review the skill taught. Week 3: (Theme) Students will learn how to determine the theme of a fiction text. There will be a teacher-led lesson about how to determine the theme or lesson the author is trying to teach you through a (I do, We do and You do) format. The lesson will be taught through a PowerPoint presentation which will be engaging, interactive and will contain visuals. Intro-What is a lesson someone taught you before? (Eating healthy, working hard, help others, etc.) Direct Instruction- The process of how to determine the theme of a fiction text will be taught through graphic organizers and visuals. (I Do)- I will model how to determine the theme of a fiction text about a winter activity. (We Do)- We will determine the theme of a fiction text about a different winter activity together. (You Do)- You will complete task cards determining the theme of fiction texts about winter activities.
