Experiencia de clase

Nivel de inglés: desconocido
Grado de EE. UU. Kindergarten - 2
While this is an asynchronous (NO live meetings) class, see below the many ways we will interact and enjoy the text and create extensions together. Each week, we will cover one chapter of the book "Winnie-the-Pooh" by A.A. Milne (the original version published in 1926 now in the public domain), so in our five weeks together, we will read half of the book.

In my main pre-recorded lesson each week, I read one chapter expressively and use props like felt characters to further illustrate the story. I engage learners with four main kinds of questions for each chapter:
1. How we can each relate to the story (ex. Do you have a special stuffy like Christopher Robin does?)
2. Expression of preferences (ex. What was your favorite part of this chapter?)
3. Analysis of the text (ex. Is Christopher Robin a good friend? What does he do to be a good friend to Pooh)
4. Creative solutions for the story (ex. What is another way Pooh could try to reach the honey?)
Learners share their responses to the questions and other thoughts and/or questions about the story through comments on the classroom post, videos on the classroom post, and/or images of handwritten responses using the question worksheet or a separate sheet if desired. I respond to learners' answers and respond to weekly video posts with personal video feedback.

In a separate pre-recorded videos, I guide the learners in creating a simple craft and a simple drawing related to that week's chapter and encourage them to share theirs in the classroom. I give a quick example of how to describe their craft in English or Spanish.

Optional SPANISH COMPONENT: For students that are also learning Spanish, in a separate video I also include a brief, simplified re-telling of each story in Spanish, plus brief notes and accompanying worksheets. Please note that this Spanish add-on component is completely optional and available to all, but designed for students who have already begun learning the language.

For our learner-to-learner interaction in this course, we have:
- Charades: We act out characters from the Winnie-the-Pooh and guess who the other learners are acting out.
- Pooh Songs Talent Show: We may not know the tunes Pooh used for his original songs, but we can make up our own tunes! Put one of Pooh's many songs to music and sing it for us, and comment with what award you give to at least one of your classmates' submissions (Examples: Very Fast, Dramatic, Upbeat, Silly). At the end of the course, I will give each participant a personalized award certificate for a Pooh song they sang.
- Pooh Coloring Sheets Art Gallery: A post where learners share their coloring sheets and comment with what award they give to at least one of their classmates (Examples: Variety of Colors, Expertly in the Lines, or Very Creative Coloring) At the end of the course, I will give each participant a personalized award certificate for a coloring sheet they shared.
- Hundred Acre Wood Scavenger Hunt: Each learner asks the others to find a particular kind of item that is in the Hundred Acre Woods. We look for and share things in or around our homes in response.

Each week I provide: Questions worksheet about the chapter, English vocabulary worksheet connected to words in the chapter, Spanish notes and worksheets, one or more coloring sheet(s) from the original illustrations in the public domain book, and any print-out materials needed for the craft.

It is helpful if you have a physical copy of the book to refer to as well, but the original book is now in the public domain in the US, so it is accessible on places like https://www.gutenberg.org/files/67098/67098-h/67098-h.htm.

Perfil
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I hold a 2011 Bachelor of Arts in English, and I taught English literature and grammar in a brick-and-mortar classroom for one year, plus writing and grammar in live online classrooms for three years to middle schoolers. This particular class fills me with excitement because the A.A. Milne is my favorite children's author. His stories and poetry have fascinated me since childhood, and I look forward to sharing this joy with learners in this class!
