Giving consent means giving permission for something to happen. We often think and talk about consent in regards to sexuality. While consent does play a major role in sex education, younger children can first learn to honor their bodies and personal space in a general sense.

Understanding consent is critical to the development of healthy physical and emotional boundaries. Discussions about what consent means should start from early childhood and are a necessary precursor to eventually having a strong sense of self and positive intimate relationships.

In class, we will talk about what consent means in a general sense. I will include private parts of the body in the discussion, but this is not a class about sex and does not require a child to have knowledge of sex. I use the FRIES method to teach this topic. Consent is:

Freely given
Reversible
Informed
Enthusiastic
Specific

After this talk, we will discuss different scenarios, discerning whether or not consent is necessary. Should a new friend give you an extra long hug without asking? What if your neighbor pats your bottom? Is it okay not to want others to touch your hair? What if you don’t want to be tickled? Students will walk away from this class understanding physical boundaries and personal space.

Otros detalles

Orientación para padres
This is not directly a sex education class and sex will not be discussed. However, questions will be posed, such as "Is it okay for your neighbor to touch your chest or pat your bottom?". It is not necessary for a child to have had discussions with parents about sex before taking this class. In fact, this learning is a great primer to segue into sex education with pre-teens.
Lista de útiles escolares
We will play a game in class that will require each learner to either have a secondary device (phone or tablet), or have a parent to help open another window on the device the student is using for class if needed.
Recursos externos
Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.

Perfil
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I am a licensed master social worker, specializing in providing counseling for children and parents. I have worked as a school social worker, giving sex education workshops and classes as well as running a teen parenting program in high schools. I worked in women's health for many years - nursing in the military, running a health program for refugee women and working and as a labor and delivery social worker. Teaching consent is extremely important to me, as I am well versed in the tragedies that understanding it can prevent.
