Hi! If you don't know me yet, my name is Sarah and I'm a Master's student about to complete a degree in Biomedical Engineering. More importantly, I've also been an Outschool teacher for a few years and I am passionate about bringing some of the coolest, most advanced science topics to curious learners. This one-time session will take students through an overview of what Biomedical Engineering is (it's one of my most asked questions), and what kinds of cool things Biomedical Engineers can do! We'll briefly touch on different topics like... 1. Bioimaging (medical images like MRI, X-rays) 2. Biomaterials (tissue engineering, regenerative medicine) 3. Biomechanics (prosthetics, implants) ... plus whatever questions the students want answered! This session is meant to be a very casual and open introduction to both myself and to Biomedical Engineering. It's perfect for students who... - are curious about what Biomedical Engineering is, want to be a Biomedical Engineer, or want to learn about how to get involved with STEM when they grow up! - are interested in taking one of my science courses (I have many), but want an introduction to my teaching style in a low-commitment and casual environment - just generally really enjoy talking about science-y things and like to ask questions - want to know about what it's like studying STEM in college and being a college student There is no real structure to this one time session, but it will be 1 hour of discussion-driven learning. I'll start by introducing myself and asking the students some guiding questions before diving into our 3 main topics (listed above) with lots of room for interaction. Then, I'll open to floor to questions and we'll see where it takes us! Hopefully after the session your learner will feel like they know a little bit more about this really cool field of engineering, and maybe want to sign up for one of my science courses to enhance it! Or, not. No pressure! :)
Metas de aprendizaje
After this one-time session, your learner should...
1. Be able to define what Biomedical Engineering is, as a concept.
2. Recall the 3 main sectors of Biomedical Engineering: Bioimaging, Biomaterials, and Biomechanics
3. Discuss some different examples of how Biomedical Engineers impact areas of medicine and science.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Licenciatura en Ciencia desde Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
I've been a Biomedical Engineering student for 5 years. I'm currently pursuing (and am almost done with) a Master's of Engineering degree in this field. I completed my Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering Cum Laude in 2022 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Because of my degrees, I've been able to touch nearly every area of Biomedical Engineering and have had the privilege to learn from masters in the field. My concentration is Biomaterials, but my depth in coursework makes me competent in other areas as well.
