While most of you are probably familiar with the professions of a teacher, a doctor, or a firefighter and have some idea about their day-to-day activities, you might be wondering what kinds of other careers are out there. Having spent almost 14 years in the software security industry, I am eager to share my experience with you. Equipped with a few slides, I will talk about what it means to be a software security researcher, what a typical work day may look like, what skills go alongside this profession, and how to go about entering it. There will be plenty of time for discussion and Q&A. This class will introduce me as a teacher and may be used to request topics in software security you want to learn about that may become the basis for my future classes at Outschool.

A homeschooling mom by day, a music lover by night, and a software security researcher by trade, Yekaterina (Katrina) O'Neil is a native Russian speaker who holds a BS and MS in Computer Science with emphasis on security from the University of California in San Diego (UCSD). While at UCSD, Katrina had been a tutor and a reader for several computer science and math courses, and enjoyed the experience immensely. Since 2004 she has been working in the software security industry, where she has been researching security vulnerabilities and developing tools for helping developers avoid them. She has been a speaker at security conferences and an author of several articles.
In 2017, Katrina started homeschooling her son and has been drawn to the idea of teaching ever since. She is hoping to use the Outschool platform to transfer the knowledge, passion, and experience she gained in life and in industry to the interested learners. Reseñas
