Have you ever wondered about the magical world of animals and organisms that exist in our aquatic environment? Dive into the world of sea turtles, fishes, corals, sharks, and many others in an exploration that will take students into a world full of amazing creatures. Explore areas such as the Great Barrier Reef and learn about the multitude of species of aquatic life that exist. Students will learn about coastal ecology and conservation, which will include exploring conservation groups and how they are helping to protect and conserve organisms. We will also study the biological impacts of climate change and how it affects marine organisms such as corals, fish, polar bears, walruses, sea lions, penguins, and sea birds. Learn about the life cycles and different habitats of underwater organisms and what makes them so amazing and extraordinary. Also, get an introduction to why some species are at risk for extinction and what can be done to protect them.

Students will learn about how the different environments are home to amazing animals, organisms, and plant species and how the effects of pollution, unsustainable development, and our growing human population is affecting them.

Students will work with Nearpod, an interactive software program that allows students to participate in discussion boards, answer short quizzes, and watch interactive videos that pertain to course material. There are no pre-requisites for this course, just a love for animals and the environment.
Students will also work with CK-12 an interactive learning platform, that allows students to answer practice tests, read articles, and work in interactive textbooks. Assignments will be assigned in this platform weekly. Each student will be provided with their own login information to access their assignments and readings, which the teacher will set up.
Students will also work with Gimkit, a website that allows students to participate in interactive quizzes that will reemphasize the material presented to them in the recordings.
In this 20-week course, students will have one recording per week and receive articles corresponding to those recordings. The recordings will be posted by the date the class is scheduled, so for example, if your class is on a Saturday the recordings will be posted by the end of the day on Saturday therefore the students can choose when they would like to view them. The length of the class can be extended if needed to allow students to have time to view recordings and access materials.

Perfil
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have been working as a private tutor for grades 5-12 in Science and English since 1999. I also worked as student mentor to post doctoral and summer student fellows for over ten years while I worked as a Research Chemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. During my work there, I had the opportunity to become and author in a text book on high resolution mass spectometry and as well as being part of a documentary on the Discovery Channel. Previous to my work at Woods Hole, I worked as a chemical technician in a local environmental lab working on land and water pollution. During the summer, I also was blessed with the most incredible opportunity of working as a naturalist on a whale watch boat. Following my time working in research, I owned and operated a childcare for over 7 years where I taught preschool and tutored grade school children in the afternoon. I earned my B.S. in Cellular/Molecular Biology with a minor in Biochemistry from Bridgewater State University in 2000 and a M.S. in Education in 2015 from Walden University. Currently I am working on my M.S. in Biology with a specialization in Environmental Sciences from the University of Nebraska, Kearney. I have loved teaching and mentoring students of all ages and am thankful to add online teaching to my experiences in education. I am a huge advocate of online learning since it has not only benefited me, but my children as well.
