Learners will "popcorn" read aloud through a series of comprehension stories. They will call on another learner in the classroom to continue reading as they and other readers follow along. Learners will focus on a unique reading genre each week and key learning objectives for acquiring reading comprehension skills and strategies.

🎓 This course is perfect for learners who want to improve their reading fluency and comprehension skills and develop greater confidence in their ability to effectively interpret the text through our weekly strategies. Learners may join the journey toward reading comprehension mastery at any time, pause when they need to, and resume the course again!

😁🖱🖌️💻🔌We'll meet weekly for fun and interactive classes where we'll complete activities to help us understand and apply our weekly reading comprehension strategies. By the end of each class, learners will demonstrate their acquired knowledge for each with engaging text-dependent questions.

♻️The topics will cycle back to the beginning of every 12 weeks and do not occur in sequential curriculum order. Each reading lesson, skills, and assessments are unique from week to week. Permission is obtained to utilize examples and adaptations used each week.

Learners will meet weekly with the teacher following the scheduled topics:

Wed, May 8
In this class, we will explore the incredible life and achievements of Mae Jemison, a scientist, artist, and activist. Through an engaging informational text about Jemison's life, education, and pioneering space ventures, we will develop strategies to reinforce learners' comprehension skills through discussions, interactive activities, and reflection questions. Learners will have the opportunity to write their responses about the significance of Jemison's contributions to science and society.

Wed, May 15
In this comprehensive class, we will collaboratively read an excerpt from the classic story, The Wizard of Oz. While reading, we will examine the passage, paying special attention to the sensory details that help create the different settings. Using a collaborative approach, we will discuss and analyze the details in the passage and use them to compare and contrast the different settings. By answering questions about the sensory details, learners will deepen their understanding of the settings and how they contribute to the overall story.

Wed, May 22
In this class, we will take a fascinating journey into the lives of two remarkable women from different times and places: civil rights activist Amelia Boynton Robinson and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who was admired for her dedication to freedom and opportunity for all. Through reading two informative passages about these women, we will analyze their achievements and legacies using comprehension strategies to connect key ideas and events through a series of reflective questions. Through this lesson, learners will develop reading comprehension skills and gain a newfound appreciation for the contributions of female role models.

Thu, May 29
In this lesson, we will review a selected poetry piece by Robert Frost “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening". Our focus will be on identifying the rhyme scheme, and we will also learn about the unique features of poetry that contribute to the overall meaning of the poem. Along the way, we will use various learning tools to understand poetic devices like rhyming lines, meter, and grammar in writing. By the end of the lesson, learners will have the opportunity to create their own acrostic poem, which will allow them to put their newfound knowledge into practice and express their creativity through poetry!

Thu, Jun 5
In this class, we will dive into a non-fiction passage titled "The History of Movies." Through this passage, learners will read and discuss the evolution of movie-making and how movies have been made throughout history. Through fun activities, we'll explore effective strategies to summarize. We'll also read to understand key concepts and ideas in our "cut out" activity to sequence events in order. All who are interested in movies, history, and improving their reading skills, are welcome!

More weekly lessons to come!
