- Students will learn about life, physical, and earth science as they experiment with different aspects of each field of science. How do larvae transform into butterflies, what happens to a seed when I plant it, what type of clouds predict rain, why do some things sink and others float in water, why do some things conduct electricity and other items do not, what causes objects to move?

No previous experience required.
A supply list for each unit will be provided before the unit begins. Here are the general supplies for the first unit- Weeds: 1. Examining Seeds Have a variety of seeds to look at: Supplies: Pre-Class Activity: Have seeds on hand for class: peas, string beans, lemon, orange, apples, dried beans, lentils, rice, pumpkin, sunflower, melon, flax, chia, peanut, etc. 2. Germinating Seeds 3 plastic ziploc bags 3 paper towels 9 lima or other bean seeds Scotch tape Ruler 3. Growing Bean Seeds 3 clear plastic cups or glass jars 3 paper towels 9 lima or other bean seed Inside a Seed: 4. Supplies: Lima bean seeds (4) Warm water 5. Growing seeds and seedlings: Grow Light (optional) $9 Amazon Or a sunny place to start seeds. Seeds you choose to grow: herbs (basil), flowers (marigolds), vegetables (radishes) Seed starting mix Pots Saran wrap Popsicle sticks (markers to label pots) Permanent marker Cardboard box or tray (if desired) 6. Grow your sprouted beans: What do plants need? 3 small flower pots OR clear plastic cups; Potting soil to fill all 3 pots/cups; numbered tags (1,2,3); saucer or plastic dish to hold pot/cup 7. Looking for light one small plant (4” pot) (Pothos philodendron, spider) In the dark one small plant (pothos, philodendron, spider) 8. Leaf prints Collect as many leaves/flowers as possible. (house plants, outdoor plants, trees, bushes, etc.) Supplies for leaf press: 8” x 11” cardboard 8’ x 11” copy paper rubber bands 9. Identify Weeds Do you have a dandelion you can collect and place in a jar of water before class? 10. Rooting a Plant Need baby spider OR leaf from pothos OR philodendron Vase Water 11. Roots from Garbage Carrot top Saucer Water 12. Parents will be asked to print the weekly lessons, when posted, which will provide visual guides for the students so they can independently execute each project. Minimal assistance should be provided in order for the student to be fully engaged in the course and learn the material.
