Come with me as we explore common Latin prefixes, roots, and suffixes that form the foundation of many English words. By understanding these building blocks, you’ll gain the tools to decode unfamiliar words with confidence!

✨Why Learn Latin Roots?✨

Decode New Words Instantly:
Understanding roots like "tele" (meaning "distant") empowers you to grasp the meanings of words like "television" and "telephone," making it easier to understand and use a broader vocabulary.

Strengthen Your Communication Skills:
With a deeper understanding of word origins, you’ll be able to express yourself more clearly and accurately in both spoken and written English.

Join us weekly as we delve into 8 new words, each derived from Greek roots. Through engaging discussions and activities, we'll build a strong working vocabulary that strengthens reading comprehension and boosts writing skills.

PLEASE NOTE -- Part I (Latin) and Part II (Greek) can be taken in ANY ORDER.

We will discuss:
✨ Syllable Division: Break down complex words into manageable parts.
✨ Definitions: Learn precise meanings that enhance understanding.
✨ Parts of Speech: Master how each word functions in a sentence.
✨ Synonyms: Expand your vocabulary with related words.

We will also practice reading words in context to understand their meanings.

After each class, the weekly word list and optional activities will be accessible for further practice and reinforcement, ensuring continuous growth beyond the classroom.

I have taught in my homeschool for 20+ years and taught ESL for 10+ years online -- spelling is just a challenge! English is such a mish-mash of other languages that it creates some crazy ways to spell words. Learning roots and common prefixes and suffixes helps build vocabulary which can then be applied to writing and reading comprehension. Practice and reinforcement are the best tools for learning these words...games and friends make the learning fun!

In addition to teaching my own kids, I have a journalism degree from Penn State, and I am IMSE Orton-Gillingham trained in phonics and reading instruction.
