This will be a part lecture part discussion-based class on viruses. Students will learn by interacting with the teacher and with each other. We will begin the class with basics of biology. We will cover what a virus is, what viruses typically do, how they spread and make people sick, and different types of viruses we've seen throughout history, including this current one. We will discuss why we social distance when viruses float around, what flattening the curve means during pandemic situations, and what we can do to stay safe and healthy like washing our hands and eating good food to help our immune systems. Questions will be welcomed throughout, and I will answer any questions about the science and encourage others to give their thoughts as well.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn the basic genetic material of a virus, how viruses are different from bacteria, how they use humans as the host organism, how they can spread human to human, how they are diverse and how they get stronger, and what scientists do to defeat them. Students will also learn to wash their hands, wipe down surfaces, keep a distance, etc. when preventing the spread of a virus. They will also learn how they can carry a virus without being sick and why it is important to stay away from others when there is a chance they might be a carrier. They will ultimately learn that viruses, although they can seem scary, knowing all the facts and how to handle them is pretty straightforward and not scary at all.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Hello! My name is Shilpa. I am so happy to be here! I graduated from Valparaiso University in 2018 with a B.S. in Chemistry and Biology, magna cum laude. I am currently a PhD Candidate at UT Southwestern Medical Center. I study cancer biology, and what that means is that I work in a lab and get to use cool equipment like microscopes and centrifuges! I love teaching science from the perspective of a scientist and bringing real world examples into the classroom.
Science is SO fun and I love to share my passion for it with others! Not only does science teach us more about the world around us, but it helps us learn problem solving skills that we can use in our everyday lives! I take a student-centered approach in my teaching; my main goal is to be aligned with my students' interests. I want to know what they like, what they want to get out of my class, and generally, what they are curious about. I teach to cater to each and every student's individual needs while fueling a passion for learning and I encourage lots of interaction with me and with each other in the classroom.
