This class is a 4 day camp that will read together 4 stories from the Viking Sagas retold for 9-11 year olds. Learners will listen to the story and then engage in writing activities each day. We will discuss the 'big questions' in the text, learn and use new vocabulary, use our retrieval and inference skills as well as a writing activity specific to the day's story. Day 1 : Meet Loki, god of fire, shapeshifter and trickster as he retells the story of Odin's creation of the lands of Asgard, Midgard and Utgard. Writing activity: You are interviewing Odin, write your interview questions. We will look at punctuating direct speech. Day 2 : We meet Thor, god of thunder, who intends to travel to a freezing land and fight Odin's enemies, the giants. Writing activity : A menu fit for Thor. Write a five course menu for Thor using descriptions, noun phrases, prepositional phrases and verbs. Day 3 : Thor and Loki come across an unusual building, which turns out to be a giant's glove! Thor's hammer has no effect on the giant, how will Thor challenge and defeat him? Writing activity : write a letter from Loki to Odin asking for help. Day 4 : Thor engages in a series of challenges set by the giants, one of which is to lift the giant's huge cat! Can Thor beat the giant's grandmother in a wrestling match? Writing activity : write an extract from Thor's diary. Learners will need pen and paper for the main writing activity, this class will also use Nearpod.
