This is a ukulele introduction camp for young learners. Fine motor skills are a difficult obstacle for young ukulele players, so this course is designed to move slowly in a fun, interactive way. Students will learn the parts of the ukulele and how to strum in time. They will also learn how to position their fingers to play a C chord. Students are encouraged to use a guitar pick as it is often easier than using a finger or thumb for young learners. Any ukulele instrument will do for this class. Please come to class with the ukulele tuned to GCEA so that your child can have the pleasure of hearing sweet sounds from their own ukulele during class. *If your child is left-handed, the ukulele needs to be restrung or you should get a left handed ukulele. The actual instrument is not different, but it is stringed backwards so the "G" string is closest to the ceiling. Otherwise, encourage your child to strum with the right hand. Week 1 - Introduction to the ukulele and music basics. Students will learn the parts of the ukulele. They will learn how to hold the ukulele properly. They will practice strumming up and down without pushing down any strings. They will be introduced to the C chord shape and what to do with your left hand on the ukulele. Week 2 - Students will practice rhythm and timing. The teacher will demonstrate through dancing and counting how rhythm is used to play the ukulele. Students will have fun strumming and singing along with nursery rhymes. Week 3 - Students will review concepts of rhythm, timing, and the positioning of the fingers to play the C chord. They will continue to practice strumming up and down while counting to 4. The teacher will incorporate simple music theory information in a fun way so children can be introduced to these concepts. Week 4 - Students will review what they have learned during the camp. We will practice strumming along in rhythm. Students are encouraged to participate in whatever way they feel comfortable, including singing and dancing. If the teacher feels some students are ready, then the Am chord will be introduced in this lesson.
