Experiencia de clase

Grado de EE. UU. 6 - 7
For eight weeks, we will read a variety of highly acclaimed books across genres. I have chosen these books to get students excited and engaged with the writing, making them want to share their thoughts with others. This book club targets upper middle-grade students, bridging the gap between middle-grade and young adult, and the books reflect that by being slightly more challenging than some readers may be used to.

This class is for the student who devours books, and because of this, we will be reading one book every week and discussing the essential themes in each book. Students who enjoy sharing their thoughts with others either on the microphone or via the chat box will do well in this class. Students who do not like to participate may not enjoy this class or feel very successful with it. I do not force students to participate but instead expect students to discuss, engage, and pay attention during class.

Every week we meet for a lively discussion that I facilitate. The books we will be discussing are:

Week 1 - Wings in the Wild by Margarita Engle
Week 2 - Star Splitter by Matthew J. Kirby
Week 3 - A Skeleton in the Family by Leigh Perry
Week 4 - Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz
Week 5 -
Week 6 - Deeplight by Frances Hardinge
Week 7 - And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
Week 8 - The Byways Mary Pascual

Every week, I will lead a round-table discussion for each book we read. In terms of structure, we will discuss topics ranging from the author's intent to character and plot development. Then we will all share our opinions as we analyze the works. By facilitating the discussion, I will model to the students how to express their thoughts and debate and discuss topics with their peers. Every student in the class will have an opportunity to share their opinion.

Please note, we need 4 students to run this book club. Please consider sharing the listing after you enroll your student. Thank you!
Metas de aprendizaje
Book clubs in middle school are a great way to teach students to form and share opinions with others which are an important skill to have as they get older. I run all book clubs so every student is able to answer questions that I pose and participate in the lively discussion. I am also aware that some students prefer to participate through chat than on a microphone. This is completely acceptable. My goal for the students is to get them to share their thoughts however they feel comfortable doing that.

Families are responsible for looking up the books before enrolling if you have any concerns about content. The books chosen for this book club are for tweens/teens and do deal with content on par with this age group, including violence, mild romance, and social issues. When My Name was Keoko has violence, racism, torture, Scythe has violence including the deaths of young people, Ender's Game has violence/language, And Then There Were None has violence, Prisoner B-3087 deals with concentration camps, and Most Dangerous tackles the Vietnam war. If you feel your student is sensitive or as a family you are cautious, please review each book to see if this class is a match for you and your student. Common Sense Media, Amazon, and GoodReads are resources that help with previewing books. If you still have additional concerns, please reach out to me prior to enrolling. Thanks.
