This class is designed to help the student improve writing confidence and ability - no matter the student's current level.
We will begin with a discussion of the three main types of writing (persuasive, expository, and narrative) along with a brief survey of rhetorical strategies (analyzing cause and effect, comparing and contrasting, describing/defining, as well as logos/ethos/pathos/kairos).
Next, we will review a broad outline of the writing process:
1. Brainstorming/prewriting
2. Outlining
3. Drafting
4. Revising
5. Proofreading/editing
We will review scoring rubrics and how to maximize performance on each domain.
Throughout the course, students will be presented with writing prompts and asked to produce material that focuses on one aspect of the writing process. For example, creating an outline based on a provided set of data in order to practice organization and planning.
