This class will be different from week to week: session topics will be learner-directed or dictated weekly based on current events/happenings/questions. No supplies are required unless a learner wants to take notes. Any resources will be provided by me and can be accessed online. 

This class is based on what learners want to know, so will be different from week to week. Maybe they have an unanswered question from class, maybe they are unsure about a natural phenomenon or something they saw on the news. I am a Science teacher with multiple specialist subjects so I can explain any concepts they don't understand and link them to relevant real world examples. This class will have a focus on expanding knowledge and minimizing ignorance, no question is off limits. Unkind words and bullying will absolutely not be tolerated. 

Please note that this class works best if students come prepared with questions they have always wanted to know the answer to.

Metas de aprendizaje

I help students develop science fluency, evidence based critical thinking skills, cross curricular connections and how to apply the scientific method to problem solving and learning. The point of this class is to nurture learner's natural curiosity and equip them with the skills necessary to do independent research, including how to spot and avoid biased news, unreliable sources and conspiracy theories.

Please note that I will answer any and all questions with straightforward, fact based, unbiased information from the most recent evidence on each topic. If there is a subject you do not want your child exploring then I recommend checking their questions over before hand. There is the possibility for these discussions to get uncomfortable if more sensitive or controversial topics are asked about. Kindness and respect are of the utmost importance to me as an educator and the answers given in class will reflect these values while being based in fact and evidence. I may opt to refuse a question if I feel it will make learners unnecessarily uncomfortable or if we do not have sufficient time left in the lesson to properly discuss the answer in full. In these instances I may tackle the question in the next lesson or recommend additional resources for students to research.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente

I have a BSc from the University of Toronto. My courses included a specialism in Human Sexuality and Reproduction, the impacts of Biology on History and Human Development and several modules covering Biology and Anthropology. 
I spent a term at the Royal Holloway University of London specializing in Invertebrates (and Australian Convict Theatre, just for fun). 
In addition I have a BEd from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education for which I extensively studied Psychology, Child Development, Equity and Diversity and best practices in Pedagogy. 
I also have a Masters of Film and Media from De Montford University in partnership with Raindance Film Festival where I researched the impact of representation in film and media and it's harmful and helpful effects on viewers, young audiences in particular. 
I was a guest lecturer at The University of Toronto for prospective teacher candidates on the topic of Equity and Diversity. I worked at the Royal Ontario Museum for 3 years and collected a large repertoire of knowledge on the natural world, History and the many specialist short term exhibits.
