This six week class will meet live twice a week, on Tuesdays and on Thursdays. This class will teach learners about current events each week from around the world, we will focus on 3-6 events in the news that week. Topics chosen will be appropriate for grades 3-5 and will be posted to the classroom page on Fridays for the upcoming week. As well as being a 'citizen of the world' this class will also teach elements of Language Arts (see learning goals for a list) we will analyse the lyrics of the rap song (one each week), learn new vocabulary, read and respond to articles, play vocabulary games with the words of the week and take a comprehension quiz. Finally, learners will use the new words they have learnt to collaborate and write a rhyming rap song about the week's events, completed lyrics will be posted to the classroom page for learners to download and keep (and maybe put on a rap show for their family). Tuesdays : analysing the lyrics of the rap song, learning our vocabulary for the week and writing activities such as a writing exercise using the 5 Ws, 'who, what, where, when, and why' Thursdays : Revise the week's vocabulary using games and comprehension quiz, using the vocabulary and stories of the week to collaborate on a rap song as a group. For example The Week in Rap for the week (6th February 2023) contains the following topics: The White House proposes changes to the 2030 US census. The US will end its COVID-19 public health emergency in May. Earth’s inner core may go into reverse, scientists say. A popular Yale course on happiness has been retooled for teens. Ants may be able to detect cancer, a study suggests. Copa América will return to the US in 2024. This class is a fun way to increase our vocabulary, learn and use new words practically and have fun with our friends from all over the world!
