Is this assigned reading? Or, do you just want to have the opportunity to read this classic? The Pearl, by John Steinbeck is a wonderful novel that covers the themes of greed, prejudice, and family. In this discussion group, we will first look into the biography of Steinbeck to understand the types of books he wrote and why. Every week, we will discuss 2 chapters of the novel. The Pearl is a parable that explores both the positive and negative aspects of human nature. It is as applicable to us today as it was when it was first written. This class is of the most benefit if your learner participates in our discussion. Come take a deep dive into the themes and characters this novel portrays. Class rules: we mute so we do not talk over one another, we are kind and respectful to everyone, and at the beginning of class as per Outschool rules, we turn our camera on so I may verify the student.

Reading outline:
Week One
Who was John Steinbeck and why did he write the types of books that have become classics?
*The student should read chapters one and two before the first class. These chapters focus on family and the prejudice of Kino's people.

Week Two
*Please have your learner read chapters three and four before the second meeting. These chapters focus on greed.

Week Three
* Please have your student read chapters five and six before our final discussion. These focus on family, what is truly important, and the
the ultimate price Kino and his wife pay in order to keep the pearl.

Also, the learner should print out and consider the "Think About" questions each week to aid in their comprehension as they read. They do need to read the required chapters before each week's class. Also, for the most benefit, the learner should be willing to interactively join in the discussion. Optional writing prompts will be assigned. If your learner choses to do the writing prompt, they may send it into the classroom for my feedback. I teach in a relaxed manner and encourage the students to think critically and be engaged in lively discussion.
