This class is a book club which follows a literature circle format, learners will have a reading and homework assignment each week. This will be according to their assigned role, each role will be introduced and skills needed will be taught the week before to ensure learners are fully equipped. Roles will rotate over the 6 weeks to ensure learners have an opportunity to practice each role. Learners will have 5 minutes each to present each week in a format of their choice.

This text by CS Lewis is perfect for a literature circle due to it's short length, reading each week will only be around 10 pages giving ample opportunity for close reading and analysis. Please also see list of learning goals.

The roles we will be using are as follows:

1. Discussion Director: The discussion director is responsible for asking questions to the group about the book. This role encourages the group to think more deeply about the text and come to a better understanding of the plot, characters, and themes.

2. Summarizer: The summarizer’s job is to continually summarize the main points of the book, as well as to provide a brief overview of the story at the end of each discussion.

3. Literary Luminary: The literary luminary is responsible for finding and highlighting interesting literary elements in the book, such as allusions, metaphors, and symbols.

4. Connector: The connector’s job is to make connections between the text and the world outside of it. This could include connecting the events and characters of the book to events and people in the student’s own lives.

5. Word Wizard: The word wizard is responsible for looking up and defining words that the group may not understand, as well as introducing new words and their meanings to the group.

6. Illustrator: The illustrator is responsible for creating a visual representation of the book, such as a drawing, painting, or collage. This can help the group to better understand the text and come to a deeper understanding of the story.
