This is not a typical book study! It's WAY more exciting. We'll combine reading the book/story with all sorts of other learning aspects. We will investigate why the author wrote certain things (plot, character examination etc),  geography of the area/s we learn about within the book, to history of the time (when the book took place), to the horse breeds we discover. Also added is a  silliness and a love of learning.
Welcome to the Island of the Lost Horses. In this beautifully written fictional story, we come alongside a young girl named Beatriz who befriends a horse. We also travel back in time as she learns about the island and who and what came before her. Mystery, friendship and life are the topics in this book. 
Beatriz and her mom, who is a marine biologist are in the Bahama Islands and Beatriz finds and island of her own. She makes friends with an old woman named Annie and finds a horse. Being 12 is a hard age to be, and Annie is struggling with her mother as well as life circumstances. She finds friendships of her own and her mom doesn't necessarily like them.
Beatriz also learns about a young girl from long ago who also loved a horse and discovers a Centuries old story. Felipa and her horse were running for their lives. Felipa tells her story from the early 1400's. 
As the story unfolds, Beatriz and Felipa have similarities and their lives become connected. She learns the future of one of the worlds most rare horses, the Barb. 
The book has 249 pages and approximately 29 chapters. Learners will read designated chapters/pages each class period and analyze the book, author and story along the way. There will be geography, history and vocabulary thrown into the mix as we journey along with Beatriz and Felipa on their lost island.  We also discuss the Barb horse, the true history of the breed and learn more about the horse breed as it exists today.

Metas de aprendizaje
Class 1: Introductions and a fun horse game. Learners will already have read pages 7 - 38 prior to this first class. We will discuss the early pages and learn about where and when our story takes place. We will learn about where the Bahamas are and who our main characters of Beatriz, her mother and Islander, Annie are and how they are important to this story. We discuss how Beatriz and her mom come to live on a boat in the Bahamas. This class period discusses the geography of the Bahamas and Great Abaco Island. We even toss in a little science and learn about jellyfish. 
Class 2: Learners will have read pages 39 -88 for this class. Beatriz went on an adventure alone. See where she went, what did she find and what dangers lie wait on the island. Quicksand thwarted her adventure, but what happened? We start to uncover the mystery of where the horse comes from. Beatriz travels back into the past and discovers a mystery. What could it mean? Find out in these pages. The class also discovers the true area of Spain where the Barb horse comes from and learns a bit about geography too. 
Class 3: Learners will have read from pages 89 to 133. We learn more about Annie in these pages and her connection to the wild horses. Flashing back and forth from 1400's to present time, we learn more about the mysterious Felipa and how she is connected to the Spanish horses. As the mystery unfolds, we also learn about the history that is accurate of this time and about the characters such as Queen Isabella I and Christopher Columbus. There is truth to every work of fiction, find out which pieces of the book are true and which are not. 
Class 4: Learners will have read from pages 134 to 175. As Beatriz goes back time and time again to the island and to visit Annie, she learns more about the wild horse herds and more about Annie herself. As a class we discuss the techniques Annie is using to gentle the horse and how Beatriz feels about it. 
Class 5: Learners will have read from pages 176 to 215. We delve more into the life of Felipa and the late 1400's in Spain and learn about what dangers awaited her and how she disguised herself as a boy in order to hide from those who wanted her and her magnificent horse. Find out why Beatriz needed to help her older friend Annie and how she could help the horse herd on the island too. 
Class 6: Learners will have read from pages 215 to the end of the book. We will wrap up our study and talk about opinions, thoughts and ideas that the author used to tell this story. As a class each learner can critique the story and rate what they thought about the book. 
Learners will use critical thinking, unpack the writers creativity ideas and their own opinions to rate how well they thought the book was written. We can discuss possible options of what the author could do/have done differently. 
Each learner will need to purchase a copy of The Island of Lost Horses by Stacy Gregg for class. This can either be a digital book or paperback book. Paperback is avail at most book stores and Amazon.com for approximately $8 or less.

About Me

Are you looking for an enthusiastic, fun, and driven instructor?  
I have over 40 years experience working with horses, riding, showing as well as giving lessons to children. I specialize in general riding as well as gymkhana events. I have ridden western style discipline my entire life and have a huge passion for horses. My family and I also enjoy horse camping with our horses. I love to share my enthusiasm for horses and students. I use my own horses as well as fun horse experiences I've had to teach children about horses. There is plenty of history, geography, reading and loads of "other" learning too. I enjoy thought provoking conversations as well as social skills (speaking to peers).
As a  graduate of the University Of Wisconsin, River Falls in social work, I have lots of experience working with families and especially children. As a social worker I have had experience creating a program for students with special needs within our church, worked with the youth ministry team leading a group of teens as well as worked as a special education paraprofessional. I have years of experience as a social work case manager working with youth and helping them move in a positive and creative direction.
I have had numerous experiences with working with diverse groups of people through my career as a social worker as well as a horse instructor. 
I enjoy travel and geography and enjoy sharing a fun and educational theme of each area of study. 
The classes that I teach are all related to horses. They are not your traditional horse classes. I incorporate horses with other subjects as well. Whether it is geography (when doing a class about rodeos and cattle drives) or history (when discussing a book study that takes place in the Bahamas and includes a horse breed, The Barb horse) and I also pride myself in making each class fun and making sure that each learner feels heard as well as has a positive and fun learning experience. I am a firm believer that if a young person enjoys what they are learning about, they put a lot more effort into learning it. 
Note: Parents, if you see a class that your learner would like and your learner is out of the "age range" please check with me. Most of my classes can be for any age and/or I can sometimes adjust to fit.
