3, 2, 1... THE FLOOR IS LAVA!! This class is geared for our young learners! STEM classes are a great way for students to build confidence, complete hands-on tasks and develop critical thinking skills. During this class, I will offer suggestions during the building portion as well as encourage perseverance! For students who are up for the extra challenge, I will modify the lesson within the class to meet their needs!

Why is STEM so important in our learning? Stem activities encourage problem solving skills at a young age where there can be multiple solutions to the problem. STEM requires students to use trial and error, which is a great real life skill to inquire.

In this class, students will work on social skills by interacting with myself and peers about their building and ideas. Students will have the opportunity to share their tower and explain the steps they took to keep their objects out of the lava. In this course, students should be ready to move for our introduction to the lesson and have a clear working space to build their activity.

Class Outline
1. Introductions: students will have the opportunity to introduce themselves to other peers
2. Introductory Hook: The Floor is Lava on Youtube. RULES before completing game. Students will move around their home (staying close to the screen, of course) and follow the directions of dancing, hoping, jumping until the floor turns to lava!
3. What does it exactly mean when I say the floor is lava?
4. Go over materials.
5. Explain the challenge. Students must rescue as many bears (or objects) from the lava using only the given materials in a 7-10 minute time limit.
6. After the time limit is up, students will freeze. We will then go around and students should count how many bears (or objects) they saved from the lava.
7. Sharing time for each structure. What helped you during the challenge? What was difficult?
8. Students now get to use the index card for their structure. If used the correct way, more bears (or objects) can be saved!
9. STEM challenge continues for another 5-7 minutes while students try to save a greater number.
10. Share time- what was different?

*Important Notes for Parents*

1. Please make sure your learner knows how to use the mute/unmute buttons.
2. During this class, we are sharing the structure that we made during class. No other objects or toys should be brought for show and tell.
3. I follow the Outschool limited refund policy in an effort to keep spots free for other students.
4. The minimum number of learners for this class is 2. I am happy to transfer students to a different section if needed.
5. All students will have the opportunity to share and speak during class. Students are not required to speak, but encouraged.

The classroom waiting room will open around 2 minutes before class begins. I will open the class right at start time and get ready for introductions. Please make sure your learner is at the screen and ready to listen and learn!

I am so excited to see you make it out of the lava!!!
