Many students already have an innate knowledge that the human body can do extraordinary things even if they don’t yet know why or how. If they are in sports they may ask, “Why do inhalers help some people breathe?” or “Why do we feel more energized after eating a snack or a meal before a game?” After stubbing their toe on the door they may ask “Why does it hurt so much more to stub my toe than hit my arm?” These questions and more will guide students through a tour of the human body in this eight week course that meets twice weekly. In this class, students will explore the digestive system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, nervous system, and musculoskeletal system. As we move through each system, students will engage in home experiments, virtual labs, and games to explore the wonders of the human body! Not only will they learn new content about the human body but they will also engage in the skills of a scientist through asking questions, gathering evidence, and drawing conclusions from data. Below is the breakdown of the topics we will visit during each session. Anatomy and Physiology 6 Week Course Week 1 - Introduction to Body Systems a. What are the major body systems and what are their jobs? b. Structures and Functions and Levels of Organization (Cells —> Organisms) Week 2 - Digestive System a. Bread Digestion Lab and Parts of the Digestion System Mini lesson b. Parts of Digestive System Lesson and Review Week 3 - Cardiovascular System a. Heart rate activity and Parts of the Heart Lesson b. Pathway of Blood flow through the heart activity Week 4 - Respiratory System a. Parts of the Respiratory System Lesson b. Lungs and Body Tissue Gas Exchange Activity Week 5 - Nervous System a. Introduce Nervous System Lab (completed outside class time) and nervous system lesson b. Review Results of Nervous System Lab and Complete nervous system lesson Week 6 - Muscular Skeletal System a. 3 types of muscles (skeletal, smooth, cardiac) b. Muscles and bones mini lesson Week 7 - Review Week a. Review all body systems using booklet and kahoot b. Start body systems choice project Week 8 - Project Week a.
