In this fun class, students will learn about utilitarianism, consequentialism, deontology, teleology and many other ethical doctrines and political leadership styles. They will also encounter various forms of government and political ideologies. Each class focuses on chapters from several dystopian novels. Students choose one novel to read and the teacher will tie them all together in a comprehensive way. Please note that students should divide the number of chapters in the book they choose by five, that is what they should read a week while taking this course. At the beginning of each class students will journal to reinforce topics. I have taught this class around 30 times and although it is very different, it works so well. The biggest bonus is that students often become avid readers when they find books they love. Each week students will be given a reading assignment for one of the following books: Scythe: Neal Schusterman Divergent: Veronica Roth Icons: Margaret Stohl Variant: Robison Wells Ender's Game: Orson Scott Card The Selection: Keira Cass The Hunger Games: Suzanne Collins The Maze Runner: James Dashner Students are welcome to read more than one selection. Please read the first two chapters of your choice before our first class.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Doctorado desde State University of Buffalo School of Law
I am an experienced Professor and certified High School and Middle School teacher. I am also a retired attorney in New York State. I teach Advanced Placement US Government, Advanced Placement Comparative Government and traditional High School Government and history classes. For twenty years I have had the opportunity to work with students from Pre-K through Graduate School in both a traditional learning atmosphere and those classes that deviate from neurotypical teaching. I held my teaching certification in World History/US History/Government and Economics for Middle and High School. My teaching philosophy is that all students are individuals and unique learners that must have a stimulating educational environment where they can grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. It is my desire to create this type of atmosphere where students can meet their full potential. I will provide a safe environment where students are invited to share their ideas and where mistakes are considered education victories.
