This sixty minute class will be divided into two parts. In part one, students will be learning about the origin and meanings behind surnames or last names. Students will then be directed to research their own last name using specific credible websites I have provided. As the students research their last name, they will be filling out a worksheet that helps them learn the meaning, origin, and various spellings of their last name. The second part of the lesson will focus on family crests and coats of arms. We will learn the origin behind them and what various symbols mean that appear on these family crests. At the end of the lesson students will be given the opportunity to create their own coat of arms using a template I have provided. My teaching style tries to tailor to the various learning styles. We will have short lectures in order to learn the information. Each lecture will have many pictures for your students to view and many stories for me to tell. Following each lecture there will be an interactive activity. I love having discussions where we can share out what we learned and found about our own history. No prior knowledge is necessary, just an interest in learning History!

I will be providing a surname worksheet that students will be asked to download. They can complete it digitally or print it out on paper. I will also be providing a coat of arms template. I would suggest printing this off as students like to draw their coat of arms and then use colored pencils to add color. I would suggest downloading these two items prior to class. Other materials that may be used would be colored pencils to color the coat of arms and scissors to cut out template when finished. An optional suggestion that I think makes the coat of arms look complete, is a piece of construction paper and glue to attach the coat of arms to the piece of construction paper.
