This is a summer introduction or review course that focuses on basic phonics skills each week. Your child will have the opportunity to learn by watching and practicing. There will be various read alouds, informational videos, songs, and hands on activities that your child will be engaged in. You can join for specific weeks or all of July and August. 

Here are the topics that will be covered: 

Week of July 4th: Consonant review & Short vowels
Learners will learn and/or review the 21 consonants and their sounds.
Learners will learn and/or review the 5 short vowel sounds. They will  have the opportunity to tap out and write CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. They will practice manipulating these words by changing initial, medial, and final sounds to make new words. They will practice reading these words alone, in short stories, and in poems.

Week of July 11th: Beginning blends 
Learners will learn and/or review how to tap out beginning blends in short vowel words. We will focus on l, r, w, and s blends. They will practice manipulating these words by changing initial, medial, and final sounds to make new words. They will practice reading these words alone, in short stories, and in poems.

Week of July 18th: Digraphs - sh, ch, th, ph, ck 
Learner will learn and/or review 5 digraph sounds. They will learn that these letters come together to make a new sound. They will practice manipulating these words by changing initial, medial, and final sounds to make new words. They will practice reading these words alone, in short stories, and in poems.

Week of July 25th:  Long vowels- silent e pattern
Learners will learn and/or review the long vowel sounds with the CVCe (consonant vowel consonant e) pattern. They will practice manipulating these words by changing initial, medial, and final sounds to make new words. They will practice reading these words alone, in short stories, and in poems.

Week of August 1st: ng
Learners will learn and/or review the glued sounds ang, ing, ong, and ung. They will learn that these letters are glued together to make a new sound. They will practice manipulating these words by changing initial, medial, and final sounds to make new words. They will practice reading these words alone, in short stories, and in poems.

Week of August 8th: Glued sounds - nk
Learners will learn and/or review the glued sounds ank, ink, onk, and unk. They will learn that these letters are glued together to make a new sound. They will practice manipulating these words by changing initial, medial, and final sounds to make new words. They will practice reading these words alone, in short stories, and in poems.

Week of August 15th: R-controlled vowels - or, ar, er, ir, ur
Learners will learn and/or review the bossy r sounds. They will practice manipulating these words by changing initial, medial, and final sounds to make new words. They will practice reading these words alone, in short stories, and in poems.

Week of August 22rd: Long Vowel Teams 
Learners will learn and/or review that when vowels come together the first one makes its long vowel sound. They will learn ai, ay, ee, ea, ie, and igh . They will practice manipulating these words by changing initial, medial, and final sounds to make new words. They will practice reading these words alone, in short stories, and in poems.

Metas de aprendizaje

Students will learn and practice different sounds that phonemes make. They will be able to build, manipulate, write and read words based off of the sounds taught. Students will be able to rhyme and break words into syllables.

Students need paper, pencil, coloring materials, glue/tape for each class. 
There will be documents to print for class that will be posted to the classroom page prior to each meeting.

Hello! My name is Maria Ramirez. I have a masters degree in elementary education from Simmons University. I hold a Massachusetts teaching license for grades 1-6 and a Moderate Disabilities License for PreK - 8. I have been teaching children for over 16 years in charter, public, private, online schools, homeschool, and internationally during the school year and summer. I am passionate in finding fun and engaging ways to teach. I believe in nurturing each student's curiosity and excitement to learn through hands on exploration and discovery. I am a mother to two children ages 7 and 9.  We love to spend time vegetable and fruit gardening, taking care of our chickens, painting, going on nature walks, and reading books together.
