This is a condensed version of my 5-week Chemistry 601 course, set to run over 2 weeks with new lessons every other day.

This camp is designed to provide an introduction to advanced chemical reactions. Many topics will be covered over this 2 week, 5 lesson camp that will give the student a basic understanding of acid-base reactions and reduction-oxidation or “REDOX” reactions. Students will have the opportunity to practice what they learn each week.

Monday, Week 1, Lesson 1: Basics of Acid-Base Reactions
-> Video: Acids and Bases
-> Video: pH and pOH
-> Fill in the blank note sheets for each video
-> Practice problems: differences between acid and bases, balancing acid-base reactions, calculating pH and pOH, determining if a solution is acidic or basic

Wednesday, Week 1, Lesson 2: Acid/Base Strengths and Titrations
-> Video: Acid/Base Strength
-> Video: Titrations
-> Fill in the blank note sheets for the video
-> Practice problems: determine the relative strengths of acids and bases, determine the equivalence and end point of a titration, titration calculations

Friday, Week 1, Lesson 3: REDOX reactions
-> Video: Reduction-Oxidation Reactions
-> Video: Balancing REDOX Reactions
-> Fill in the blank note sheets for each video
-> Practice problems: determine which chemicals are oxidized and which are reduced, determine oxidation numbers, balance REDOX reactions

Monday, Week 2, Lesson 4: Galvanic Cells
-> Video: Galvanic Cells
-> Fill in the blank note sheets for the video
-> Practice problems: determine anode and cathode, calculate galvanic cell reactions

Wednesday, Week 2, Lesson 5: Batteries and Solar Cells
-> Video: Batteries
-> Video: Solar Cells
-> Fill in the blank note sheets for each video
-> Practice problems: describe batteries and how they work, describe solar cells and how they work

This is a flexible schedule camp, meaning that there are no live meetings. Each class day, new videos, notes pages, and practice problems will be posted to the classroom. Students will upload their completed practice problems to the classroom (either scanned or picture taken) for feedback from the teacher. There will be a discussion thread where students can ask for help from the class and the teacher. To get the most out of this course, the teacher will provide notes pages with blanks for the students to fill in as they watch the videos. Students are expected to complete the practice problems before the next lesson as the material builds upon itself.

Each lesson will feature pre-written, fill-in-the-blank notes for each video. This is to help the students learn how to take notes in a science class. I have also found over my years of teaching that if students write things down they tend to retain the material better.

The teacher is always be available via message (either in the classroom discussion or private message) and will typically reply within 12 hours, but never more than 24 hours unless extenuating circumstances.
Metas de aprendizaje

Maestría en Ingeniería Química desde Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Licenciatura en Química desde United States Military Academy
I have taught chemistry and chemical engineering at the college level. I have a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from M.I.T. and a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from North Carolina State University. I have been teaching all disciplines of science to home school elementary, middle and high school students for 14 years. I know how to present science in a fun way to boost students interest in the subject.
