In this 6 week Stock Market course , students work together to create and manage a virtual investment portfolio of real world stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Students will be given $100,000 in virtual cash to begin investing / trading stocks. Each student is responsible for researching and evaluating potential investments. Students will make decisions on whether to buy, sell, or hold the stocks, funds, and bonds in the portfolio they have created. Lesson 1 Review the fundamentals from Part 1 Stock price and portfolio performance. News items related to the stock. Economic items related to the portfolio and the stock market. Any correlation between the news and the stock or portfolio? Calculate ROI (Return on Investment) Lesson 2 - Investment Strategies - Bonds, Diversification, & Asset Allocation Students will be able to explain what a bond is and how an investor makes money from it Read a bond fund fact sheet and understand the importance of diversifying your investment portfolio. Lesson 3 - Practice Diversification with investing simulation - Invest with STAX! Students will play a game of investing to see if they can be the market in a 20-year period and then answer reflection questions. Lesson 4 - Deep Dive into Funds Students will be able to work with your classmates to see how a Mutual Fund functions Understand the mix of stocks in a popular Index Fund - the S&P 500 Explain how investing in funds can help you minimize risk and diversify your portfolio Lesson 5 - Types of Retirement Accounts Students will be able to explain what a brokerage account is and how you can open one Identify different types of retirement accounts and their characteristics Lesson 6 - Robo Advising Students will be able to explain what robo-advisors are and why more young people are using them today, identify some of the advantages and disadvantages of using robo-advisors Conduct research on some of the most popular robo-advising and investing apps that people use Select your investments based on diversification and learn how to diversify their stock market game portfolio by investing in companies in different sectors and industries. Students learn about diversification and how investing in different companies in different industries helps reduce risk and maintain a healthy portfolio. Students will understand that an informed investor must recognize the risks involved with every investment. Students will define and illustrate the three major kinds of risk. They will examine companies and assess their risk as investments. They will write a persuasive letter motivating or discouraging an investor from investing in a company they have researched. Students learn the concept of diversification and its relationship to risk. They will also define the term "risk tolerance." How is your class structured? My class is structured to be a stress free, fun, and interactive learning environment to accommodate different learning styles and abilities. How will you teach? I will teach using slide presentation, interactive games and discussion for question and answer sessions. What's your teaching style? I believe that every child learns differently. I do my best to accommodate individual learning styles. How much will learners get to interact with you and each other (mention specifics like: lecture, games, slides, video clips, discussion)? Students will have the opportunity to discuss current market prices, trading practices, and factors that influence the stock market.

Learners will receive their unique username and password to their How the Market Works virtual stock market simulation trading challenge, where they will practice buy and selling real time stocks with virtual 100K cash.

As a state licensed Business Education Instructor and attendee of the New York Stock Exchange Teacher Education Program, I am excited to share my knowledge of how the stock market works for beginners. I spent a week with extensive interaction on the NYSE trading floor. My stock market game past participants earned 1st place in the state stock market game simulations with the highest percentage of profits competing against over 1200 teams.
