Students study and practice professional, effective physicality and vocal techniques while delivering multiple speech types such as personal share/narrative, persuasive speaking, and storytelling. Class pace is determined by enrollment and is subject to change. Day 1: Warm up exercises: tongue twisters. Introduction to personal narrative / share speeches and practice sharing a topic of interest with speech guidelines. Students learn ways to improve speeches through physical and vocal activities and teacher demonstration. After learning about other speech types, students choose a new topic for their speech type of choice: personal narrative, informative, persuasive, or How To, and receive teacher feedback. Day 2: Warm up exercises: tongue twisters and sharing personal events. Introduction to storytelling and practice in story setting and structure (beginning, middle/event, end/resolution). View a short animated clip to study and discuss its storytelling. Students learn additional presentation techniques to apply to speeches and participate in mini speech challenges. Day 3: Warm up exercises: Tongue twisters and storytelling activity. Instruction and practice in persuasive speaking. Persuasive speaking contests and personal narrative presentations. Acknowledgement of stand out speakers in informative, personal narrative and persuasive speaking. Day 4: Warm up exercises: Tongue twisters and persuasive speaking exercises. Introduction to leadership presentations through viewing outstanding young speakers (clip) and practicing confident and dynamic delivery. Students choose an activity for their classmates to participate in, allowing them to practice decision-making and authority through 'teaching.' Mini exercises in public speaking: personal narrative, persuasive, informative and storytelling speeches, with teacher feedback and student awards. Students receive a certificate for complete of Public Speaking and Debate camp. General Description: By the end of camp, students will have learned techniques for effective public speaking and storytelling, and will receive a certificate of completion. My goal is to create a supportive and warm environment for students who may be shy, ESL, or learning to build confidence. I help build strong speakers by allowing students to speak about beloved topics, move at their own pace, and feel acknowledged and rewarded. My teaching approach is based in SECD and SEL learning. In this course, healthy competitiveness is built through fun speech contests and students are given equal time to share and speak. Students practice speaking clearly and confidently, using physical and vocal gestures that capture their audience. While full self-expression is supported, students will practice proper focus/staying on topic, time limits and deciphering between what should be shared and what can be left out. Strong speakers are built through practice and encouragement!
