In the first class meeting, students will review the elements of poetry and slam poetry. Students will read and listen to a variety of slam poems and analyze their elements. Students will discuss the tone and mood of the slam poem and determine what makes a slam poem different than others. Students will participate in a variety of engaging Socratic questioning to ensure that they have an understanding of each poem. The lesson will incorporate Nearpod, allowing the students to be actively engaged in their learning! Students will also participate in brainstorming activities in preparation for writing their own slam poem! In the second class meeting, students will share their slam poem with the class! Students will listen to others and perform their own poem!

The slam poems, though appropriate for any age, sometimes deal with strong emotions. One of the slam poems is very emotional as the speaker reveals he has lost a son.

This is ALWAYS one of the most fun assignments my students complete. Though often intimidated by writing their own, every student always enjoys listening to and creating their own slam poem. I have taught this unit for seven years and everyone always loves it!
