Experiencia de clase

During this class, your child will practice and review the second 26 sight words from the Dolch Sight Word List for Kindergarten, the most commonly used list of sight words, by playing a fun and physically active game! Learners should have some prior practice with identifying sight words, but it is not required to have mastered every word! This class is designed to practice and review the words through reading and writing. There is a total of 52 words (flashcards for all 52 are included) on the Dolch Kindergarten Sight Word List. If your child loves this class, I encourage you to join Sight Word Snowball Throw (1st 26 Kindergarten Dolch Sight Words) for more fun!

I will begin class by using the “see and say” method to introduce some of the sight words. Learners will be encouraged to find their matching flashcard and repeat each word multiple times. This method appeals to both auditory and visual learners. Next, I will model writing some of the words. Your child can copy on the provided printout or write it on their own paper. Now for the fun part! Crinkle your paper into a snowball! Students will throw their snowball behind them, run and retrieve it, and then show and read me their word independently or with support! You can expect your child to be encouraged and praised throughout our time together! I will then repeat this process until we have reviewed all 26 words. Learners will also throw multiple snowballs and try to find the word I call out! We will practice using the words in sentences throughout class and as time permits.

Children have so much fun learning through this simple yet effective game to master sight words! Learners will leave feeling successful and with new sight words they can continue to practice at home!

(out, please, pretty, ran, ride, saw, say, she, so, soon, that, there, they, this, too, under, want, was, well, went, what, white, who, will, with, yes)

Metas de aprendizaje

Sight words are a collection of words that a child should learn to recognize without sounding out the letters, as many do not follow standard phonetic rules. These are foundational words that a child can use to build a vocabulary. The ability to identify sight words increases a child’s speed and fluency in reading. Students will practice recognizing 26 sight words from the Dolch Kindergarten Sight Word List. There is a total of 315 Dolch sight words recommended for pre-k through 3rd grade. These words comprise 80% of the words found in a typical children’s book and 50% of the words found in writing for adults. Once a child has mastered this list of words, it makes reading much easier.

They will also be working towards achieving the daily physical activity recommendations of both the CDC and American Heart Association. According to the CDC, it is recommended that "children (3-5 years) should be physically active throughout the day for growth and development. Children and adolescents ages (6-17 years) should do 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity each day, including daily aerobic – and activities that strengthen bones (like running or jumping) – 3 days each week, and that build muscles (like climbing or doing push-ups) – 3 days each week."

According to the American Heart Association:
Active kids are more likely to have:

-a healthy weight
-stronger, healthier bones and muscles
-better heart and brain health
-improved brain function, including memory, attention and problem-solving
-better school attendance and academic performance, especially in math, reading and writing
-lower long-term risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and some kinds of cancer
-less stress and fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression
-less inappropriate and distracting classroom behavior
-improved mental health and psychological well-being, including confidence and self-esteem

Lista de útiles escolares
-Optional printout (you are welcome to write the words on a piece of paper instead of printing)- please cut into 26 pieces/flashcards prior to class. Please print pages 7-13. You will only need half of page 7 (out/please), but if you decide to join part 1 of this class (1st 26 words) you will use the remaining words and pages. I wanted to include all 52 so that your child could have a set of Dolch Kindergarten flashcards to practice with at home! It is helpful to have the flashcards in alphabetical order to begin class.
