Experiencia de clase

This interactive class will be an open discussion about Autism Spectrum Disorder for those who have it. Students will have the opportunity to tell their story, listen to others and ponder questions about their situation. My teaching style is cooperative, student oriented, empathetic and positive. I want students to feel confident about themselves and see value in every part of them.

My Show and Tell style classes give students opportunities to talk and listen on a common topic. The Speaking and Listening strand of Common Core Standards articulate the importance of children in all grades to communicate effectively. Show and Tell style classes provide children with an opportunity to learn how to be an audience, learn how to ask inquiry based questions, anticipate and observe, use descriptive language, build vocabulary and increase confidence.

The following “Perspectives to Ponder” will be briefly discussed:
-Autism (ASD) is a disability that may affect ways people communicate, interact, behave, and learn.
-We could see people with Autism all over the world. We live in countries like Japan, France and Mexico, for example.
-People with Autism come from any ethnic group. We can be black, white, hispanic, arab, for example.
-People with Autism can be rich or poor. Family lifestyle does not decide who has Autism
-ASD is 4 times more common among boys than among girls.
-People with Autism are valuable and loved!

I will use special education strategies to help those who struggle to participate in the class. Examples would be simplifying questions, proposing hand signals for “yes-no” questions, replacing open-ended questions with 2 choices. The font used in the slides helps students with dyslexia determine letters clearly. I welcome students who use communication devices.
