¿Podrán regresar a casa?

You and your friends took a deep-sea fishing trip. A fierce storm knocked you overboard. After floating for some time, you fell asleep. When you wake up, you are alone on an island. Can you find your friends? Can you survive on the island? Will you make it back home?

In each lesson, students will hear about the ship-wreck, read a journal entry together to set up the background for their STEM challenge, and complete a STEM challenge. They will follow the six step Engineering Design Process: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Experiment, and Improve. Students plan, design, and execute their own ideas. After they have completed their activity and tested their creation, there is time for reflection on what worked and what didn't.

There are materials that will be needed for each lesson in order for your child to be successful and able to complete the STEM challenge. Those are listed below and will be reminded of during the class. Most items are basic household materials. Also, your child will need a working space and the camera will need to be angled so that it can be seen.

No prior knowledge with STEM is required. Join us as we put our minds to the test in order to survive the island and make it back home to our family!

Lesson 1: Students will create a shelter that can withstand wind and rain. Materials needed: straws, popsicle sticks, string, construction paper, 10x10 cardboard piece, scissors, masking tape, ruler

Lesson 2: Students will design a sturdy bridge to gain access to other parts of the island. Materials needed: popsicle sticks, index cards, straws, masking tape, scissors, paper, pipe cleaners, 30 pennies, ruler

Lesson 3: Students will design a tower to escape from danger. Materials needed: popsicle sticks, index cards, straws, masking tape, scissors, paper, pipe cleaners, 30 pennies, ruler

Lesson 4: Students will create a bow and arrow for protection. Materials needed: popsicle sticks, masking tape, scissors, string or yarn, rubber bands, plastic spoons, measuring tape or ruler

Lesson 5: Students will create a boat to try to escape. Materials needed: aluminum foil, paper plate, straws, masking tape, scissors, small Dixie cups, paper, cardboard, rubber bands, small tub of water, 30 pennies, ruler

Hello, my name is Cheyenne. I have my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, with an emphasis in Reading for grades K-12. I have been a teacher for over 6 years. I have taught grades 1-3, Gifted and Talented, and ESL. I am passionate about teaching and learning and I can’t wait to share my passions with your child!

I offer mainly Reading, STEM/ STEAM/ STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math), and PBL (Project- Based Learning) classes. I take a cross-curricular approach to teaching so that students can see how all subjects are related to one another. I am also more of a facilitator in the classroom. I believe that students learn best by doing. They need hands-on experiences to think critically and find a deeper meaning in their learning. Students should have many opportunities to work with their peers and learn from them as well. I provide resources, monitor progress, and encourage children to problem-solve. I like for children to think “outside the box”, be actively involved in their learning, think for themselves, and apply their learning to real-life situations. In our classes, we will take risks, create, evaluate, and embrace mistakes as learning opportunities! We will have a lot of fun together!

I enjoy cooking, baking, doing make-up tutorials, writing, and talking/learning about animals, Disney, and Harry Potter. I would like to teach courses on these topics in the future! I have two kids. My son is 2 years old and my step-daughter is 7 years old. I love spending time with my family, being outdoors, and traveling.
