NO LIVE MEETINGS - FLEX COURSE Learning to sew is fun and rewarding! As with most things, the more sewing you do, the more skilled you’ll become. Some techniques you will do frequently and feel confident of your mastery of them. However, sewing is an art where you will never learn all there is to know, what is important is to continue learning new skills and techniques. Lesson 1 - Tools of the Trade - Sewing Tool Identification Learning to sew can be a fun adventure. Sewing requires tools that may never have been used before such as a seam gauge and a seam ripper. Having the right tools and knowing how to use them will make sewing easier. Activity - Students will work together a group to complete a scavenger hunt worksheet over the basic tools required. Lesson 2 - Fabric Terms & Pattern Symbols - Learning the different types of fabric, patterns and designs for each of your projects. Activity - Students will work together as a group to create a presentation of the fabrics / patterns and designs in today's fashion. Lesson 3 - Using your Sewing Machine - Basic Parts of a Sewing Machine Operating a sewing machine is simple when you understand how to use it properly. Correct use of the sewing machine is essential to trouble-free sewing. Be patient and learn how to master your sewing machine. Check your instruction booklet and let your leader or parent help you as you learn. Activity - Students will work together to create a collaborative video over safety of a sewing machine. Lesson 4 - Machine Stitching - Practice using your sewing machine before starting your first project. This will give you experience in controlling the speed of the machine and your stitches will be straighter. Activity- students will practice basic sewing techniques, upload their work and discuss the difference in each. NOTE to PARENTS: Learner may require parental supervision during lessons 3 & 4. Students will work together to compete a scavenger hunt for sewing tools used, work together to identify different types of fabric, patterns and designed used in todays fashion, create a safety video and then demonstrate basic sewing via worksheets. They will then determine the cycle of fashion as it tends to repeat in history. In a google slide students will explain in each ear the price, the location, a few pictures of the inside and enlighten us as to why you chose this time period of clothing. How much Interaction will students have with other classmates: Students will create various activity projects individuality and as a group, upload their activities / presentation to the Outschool classroom for discussion. Students will respond to discussion questions posted in the classroom weekly. Students must respond to at least one of the messages from other students or myself.
