In this comprehensive, beginner, sewing machine set up course the learners will gain the understanding of how to set up, safely operate and set the tension on their sewing machine. We’ll also learn about various types of needles, decorative stitches, about finishing seams and making buttonholes on a basic sewing machine. They will need the physical or digital copy of their sewing machine manual for their particular sewing machine in order to operate their machine properly. If machines are not set up properly they can jam up. Literally, every single sewing machine is different and so it’s crucial for learners to have their specific sewing machine manual in hand before they start this course. In this course, we do not make anything or sew a project like in my “Sew Wut!? Creative Sewing for the Absolute Beginner”. This course is simply to help beginner sewers get their machine set up and working properly first before they move on to sewing a project. Having a small amount of scrap fabric will help them though while they do the set up. I suggest woven fabric for this beginner course. There's 2.66 hours of video content for this video only class and no live classes with me. Week 1: Sewing machine set up (video length 00:29:25) Needle overview and sewing practice (video length 00:24:19) Learners can take photos and upload them to the classroom to show me how their sewing on paper practice goes. Also, if they are struggling with machine setup they can let me know what type of machine they have so I can look up their manual online in order to help them further. Week 2: Automatic bobbin loading (video length 00:30:49) Threading the machine (video length 00:26:12) Setting the sewing machine tension (video length 00:16:23) Practice Learners can take photos and upload their paper or fabric practice so that I can see if they were able to set the correct tension on their machine. If not, then I’m happy to give them suggestions on how to fix it. Week 3 Stitches: Zig zag Decorative Satin stitch (video length 00:18:24) Learners can upload photos of their practice, to the classroom, so that I can assess how their machine is doing with these decorative stitches. I’m always happy to see any other creative work they may be working on. Week 4: (video length 00:15:54) Button holes Learners can upload photos of their practice buttonholes to the classroom. Their machine may make several types of buttonholes so I encourage them to practice all of them.

Nothing more rewarding, as an educator, than to see faces light up with joy after accomplishing something they thought was much too difficult to accomplish!
Sometimes, a learner needs to be gently nudged beyond what they think they can do. Tears and frustration sometimes follow but are usually just an outburst of fear and a ploy for me to let them give up.
Because of my years of one-on-one teaching experiences, as a teacher (and the mother of two), I feel I’ve mastered the crucial teaching finesse of helping learners through their learning fears.
As a seasoned learner and educator (and never a brick and mortar teacher) my super power is creating a fun, patient, loving and safe atmosphere for students of all ages.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Because of my passion for learning, home education and teaching, I committed and took the ultimate plunge and educated my own two children (son and daughter) at home from the time they were born (they were never in day care) until they both started in an early middle college.
Early middle college is where students take a high school along with a combined schedule with real college classes all on a technical college campus. Both started taking real college classes at age 14, both finished a bachelor degree by age 21 and graduated with honors.
At age 16, I was hired for my first official job, at my local music store to teach private piano lessons. I taught many students in my two years there and then I went on to earn my B.S. in Music Education. Since then, I've taught private piano lessons over the years to folks from ages 4-84.
For 3.5 years I was with VIPKid and taught 5,922 one on one, twenty five minute, online, immersion English lessons to 1680 different Chinese children ages 3-16.
For 4 semesters, I was one of around 150 elite teachers, hand picked out of over 160,000 teachers to be allowed to teach classrooms full of rural Chinese students in a live online session. That was super fun!
Currently, I’m a “Master” piano and voice instructor at my local Music & Arts store and at a booming dance and music studio, as well as teaching lessons in my own home.
I'm extremely busy 56 year old and in high demand, teaching all of my talents and hobbies.
Over my life, as a curious and hard working "multipotentialite", I've definitely not been afraid to push myself constantly, at every age, to learn new and exciting things.
Classically trained pianist
Black belt in Tae-kwon-do
Adobe Photoshop artist
Seamstress
Cake decorator
…are just some of my hobbies.
