Welcome to Sensational Science! This class is designed to spark your learner's interest in science and curiosity about the world around them! The Sensational Science series of classes are aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and can be taken in any order! We will alternate between a 5th grade aligned unit and a 6th grade aligned engineering challenge covering standards in both grades. This course focuses on physical science topics, specifically matter and gravity. Each week students will be introduced to a new topic, take guided notes, learn vocabulary, get to complete a hands on experiment or activity and finish with a short assessment! Our classes become small families. It is important for students to come to class on time ready to participate in their learning with the appropriate materials for that day, their cameras on and limited distractions around them. Here is a sample schedule of our class. Week 1 & 2: Conservation of matter Vocab: conserved, matter, state (of matter), chemical change, physical change, Law of Conservation of Matter Lab: Ice Weight! Bonus Lab: Chocolate Covered Strawberries Standard: 5-PS1-2: Measure and graph quantities to provide evidence that regardless of the type of change that occurs when heating, cooling, or mixing substances, the total weight of matter is conserved. Week 3-4: Particle Model of Matter Vocab: particle, matter, solid, liquid, gas Engineering Challenge: States of Matter Lab: Ooblek Standard: 5-PS1-1: Develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles too small to be seen. Week 5-6: Properties of matter Vocab: texture, hardness, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, solubility Activity: Properties of Matter Matter! Standard: 5-PS1-3: Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties. Week 7-8: Combining Substances Vocab: properties of matter, mixture, solution, solvent, solute, chemical reaction Activity: Combining Substances Lab: Make your own ice cream! Standard:5-PS1-4: Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances.

Lista de útiles escolares
Before coming to class each week, students will need to print out their interactive notes for the week. Students will need pencils and coloring utensils in each class. Additionally, each week students will need to bring special items which the teacher will post in the classroom a week ahead of time.
Recursos externos
Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Our educators have degrees in elementary education fields. We have several years of experience helping children develop a love for learning and growth mindset through teaching core subjects (math, language arts, science, and social studies).
