30 reuniones en vivo
30 horas presenciales
Tarea
4+ horas por semana. Students will have regular weekly writing assignments, as well as assigned reading. The length of the reading will vary based on the week's topic, but students should expect to spend a significant amount of time outside of class writing and editing their work. Work should be submitted via Google Docs so I can provide copyediting markup and comments.
Evaluación
Student work will be read for grammatical consistency and narrative or structural quality. If your learner requires a letter grade or written rubric, please let me know in advance, and I will provide those. Otherwise, I will make notations throughout students' submitted works using the comment and suggestion features in Google Docs.

As learners prepare for college applications, those pursuing further education in writing will typically require a professional writing portfolio. A professional writing portfolio should contain multiple examples of a writer's work, preferable across multiple genres. This semester-long course is designed to guide high school students through building their writing portfolios. We will meet twice weekly to write, workshop, and edit a range of works that will be suitable for submission to academic writing programs and professional writing opportunities. During workshopping, each writer will have an opportunity to share their work and receive feedback from the instructor and from their peers.

Our fifteen weeks together will be split between four units covering three literary genres: fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry. Students will begin with a self-assessment of their writing strengths and weaknesses; this exercise will repeat in the final week so students can assess their growth and development as a writer.

•Fiction Writing Unit: We will spend six weeks writing and workshopping two works of fiction. For each fiction work, writers will have two weeks to write (four hours of class time) and one week to workshop.

•Creative Nonfiction Writing Unit: We will spend three weeks writing and workshopping one work of creative nonfiction. Writers will have two weeks to write (four hours of class time) and one week to workshop.

•Writer's Choice/Flash Fiction Unit: We will spend two weeks writing and workshopping one piece of flash fiction/creative nonfiction. Flash fiction is a short, self-contained work that is typically under 1,500 words. Writers will have 1.5 weeks to write (3 hours of class time) and one class meeting to workshop (1 hour), for a total of four hours.

•Poetry Unit: We will spend two weeks writing and workshopping poetry in two genres, lyric and narrative. For each form, learners will have one class meeting for writing (1 hour) and one class meeting to workshop (1 hour), for a total of four hours.

Students will end their semester of writing with a reflective essay, self-assessing their writing portfolio. One class period (1 hour) will be devoted to this reflective essay.

The final class meeting will be a discussion about applying to writing programs or freelance writing jobs.

Necesidades de aprendizaje
I am experience in working with neurodivergent learners and in providing accommodations to meet individual student needs. I also provide a safe and supportive space for LGBTQIA+ students to thrive and write about their lived experience.
Orientación para padres
Creative works in this class should be appropriate for writers age 15-18, and should contain no graphic sexual or violent content. Works may include content that is distressing for some readers, and teen writers often explore themes of exploring personal identity, mental health, or sociopolitical struggles. Students may address their lived experiences with topics such as disability, neurodivergence, race or ethnicity, and LGBTQIA+ identity. Please be aware that I will not accept plagiarized or AI-generated work. "Plagiarized work" refers to the use of text in part or in full written by another writer. "AI-generated work" refers to any writing generated via any large language model (LLM) such as ChatGPT. LLMs are built using the scraped data of others' work, and the use of LLM does not teach or enhance writing or editing skills. Learners submitted plagiarized or identifiably AI-generated work will be given a warning, and then withdrawn from the class on a second offense.
Requisitos previos
