Does your learner need some sone-on-one writing instruction, but scheduling is an issue? I have created this semester-long FLEX version of my live private tutoring class to offer individualized help for your learner. This class has no live meetings. How does this work? Each week, I will create a customized video lesson. The lessons are dynamic, and each video tutorial (after the initial one) will be made with your learner's individual needs in mind. During the first week, the learner will be provided with an interactive google doc. This is where I will post instructions for homework assignments and where your learner will submit their writing. Notes, prewriting, and practice exercises will also appear on the google doc, so your learner will always have access to all of their notes and work in one convenient location that you can view at any time. Each week, the lesson will be posted by noon on Monday (Pacific Time). There will be a video lesson. Learners will then have a writing assignment to complete on their google doc. Learners should complete the writing homework before the next lesson is posted the following Monday. I will provide feedback within one week of receiving the assignment. Although the lessons will be customized, here is an example of what we might cover. Actual lessons will vary, depending on the learner's skills, interests, and age. Week 1 I will get to know your learner and assess their current skills. A brief questionnaire will be completed as well as a writing sample. Week 2 We will focus on how to choose a writing topic or respond to a prompt and how to use knowledge of purpose and audience to write better paragraphs or essays. The video will provide instruction, and learners will decide on a writing topic, purpose, and audience for their first formal essay. Week 3 We will work on prewriting--using graphic organizers or thinking maps--to plan our first writing assignment. Video demonstration. Learners will submit their prewriting. Week 4 The video lesson will show how to write excellent thesis statements. Learners will write a thesis statement for their essay. Week 5 Video lesson covers outlining. Learners will submit an outline. Week 6 Video lesson covers the components of a good introduction. Learners will write an introductory paragraph. Week 7 We will talk about supporting evidence, why it is important, where to use it, and what to use as evidence. Learners will write the body of their essay. Week 8 The video will give examples and tips for writing conclusions. Learners will write their conclusion paragraph. Week 9 The video will teach how to revise and edit. Learners will revise and edit their essays. Week 10 The video will teach the difference between informative and persuasive writing. Learners will choose a topic for their next essay. Week 11 The video will review and level-up learners' understanding of purpose and audience. Learners will write the outline and introduction for their second essay. Week 12 The video will review and level-up learners' understanding of details and evidence. Learners will write the body and conclusion of their second essay. Week 13 The video lesson will cover coherence and transitions in writing. Learners will revise and edit their essays, focusing on making the essay more coherent and smooth by adding transitions. Week 14 Learner choice: Review the skills in this class and present a portfolio OR watch a lesson video on doing basic research. These are just examples. If there are any specific skills your learner would like to work on, I can accommodate their needs. Or I can create lessons based on my assessment during the first week of class.

Maestría en Inglés desde California State University
I have taught English for 26 years at all levels: elementary school, middle school, dual enrollment, and college, and currently I homeschool my lovely children, who are 11 and 13 years old. I have taught mainstream, remedial, and GATE (gifted and talented) classes.
I have bachelor's and master's degrees in English from California State Universities.
I believe that everyone can learn and that how much you learn often depends much on the amount of effort you're willing to invest. To that end, I try to encourage and motivate my students to have a can-do attitude and a growth mindset. In part, that means that both the learner and the instructor may have to look for outside-the-box ways to approach a topic in order to make it more accessible.
For fun, I enjoy being outdoors. I love nature, wildlife, and hiking. I also enjoy spending time at home reading and sewing. Every so often I take a class in something I've never done before just to remind myself what it feels like to be new to a topic. This helps me feel compassion for my learners who are not yet experts in my content area, and it keeps me humble and helps me think of creative ways to reach my learners.
