Unlock Your Word Power!

Want to ace standardized tests, excel in college, and impress teachers with your writing? A strong vocabulary is the key, and there's no better time to start building it than now! In this dynamic video-based class, students will master 10 powerful words per session, expanding their linguistic toolbox while having fun along the way.

Each session dives deep into SAT/ACT-level words, exploring their etymology, part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and real-world usage. Students will also gain access to Quizlet, an interactive platform with flashcards and games, to reinforce their learning outside of class.

All 10 words are taken from vocabulary lists from the ACT, SAT, TOEFL, and vocabulary lists from classic books.

No two weeks are the same—each class features a fresh set of words.

The Week 100 words are trivialize, inordinate, gauge, impunity, amorphous, eclectic, provincial, tyro, adroit, pinpoint.

In the video, students are introduced to the words in a fun and engaging format. I use numerous images and examples to explain the definition of each word. Students are encouraged to copy the definition on the included worksheet.

In the second part of class, I go through the etymology, synonyms, and antonyms of each word (students should also copy down the latter two), and I give two sample sentences.

Finally, the end part of class consists of various activities, usually including a photo prompt, a replace-the-word activity, multiple-choice questions commonly seen on standardized tests, and an examination of a particular word's etymology.

Students also receive access to a Quizlet and a Nearpod activity to reinforce their retention.

Licenciatura desde University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
My passion -- as well as my professional background -- is writing. Professionally, I hold a B.A. in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and I've been published in numerous newspapers and magazines. I've also taught writing and literature classes to students of all ages and abilities. For this class in particular, I bring my innate love of vocabulary and big, beautiful words!

On a personal note, I have homeschooled all five of my children and taught them all to read and write... and with each it has been a different experience! What's easy for one child is not easy for another. When I teach online, I always remember that it's important to keep learning fun and to incorporate different methods of teaching to reach all my students.
