Welcome to part 7 of my Middle School Life Science Series! In this 5 week course, students will investigate the intricate and exciting processes of cell division and differentiation through engaging conversation, eye-popping images and enriching content.

Have you ever wondered why the human body (and most animals) have a CRAZY amount of cells? Well, when I was your age, I did too! As a Washington State Certified Life Science Teacher, I love discussing some of the most intricate and crazy processes that happen in the human body. In this course, we will open up many cells and look at how they divide and reproduce. Then, after we learn the behind the scenes of Cell Division (Mitosis and Meiosis), we will discuss what happens to all of those newly created cells through processes called cell differentiation and specialization.

My classes are always designed around my educational philosophy: To Engage, Encourage and Empower. Students will arrive to each class with an interactive note sheet excited to observe images, encouraged to ask questions and of course, feel empowered to learn more!

Course Schedule:
Week 1: Intro to Cell Division - Understanding similarities and differences between mitosis and meiosis
Week 2: Walk through of the steps of mitosis
Week 3: Walk through of the steps of meiosis
Week 4: Investigation of cell differentiation and specialization
Week 5: Final Project - Cell Division applied
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn all about the process of mitosis, meiosis, cell differentiation and cell specialization
Standards:
MS-LS1-1. Conduct an investigation to provide evidence that living things are made of cells; either one cell or many different numbers and types of cells.
MS-LS3-2. Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation.
