In this 5 week course, students will investigate genes, traits, heredity, etc. Specifically, students will learn where genes are located, how genes and traits are passed to offspring, how genes control proteins, how mutations impact the human body and all about specific genetic disorders that are common and uncommon in today's world. We will investigate these topics within both mendelian genetics and molecular genetics. As a high school biology teacher, I love creating an interactive lesson that utilizes active learning, interactive games, hands-on projects, inviting entry tasks and all sorts of media! Your student will also be appropriately challenged to think, discuss and consider science in today's world! After the course, your learn will feel confident and prepared to tackle any question or topic related to genetics. Students are expected to be between 6th and 9th grade, as the material will be appropriate for middle school students. Course Schedule: Week 1: Understanding DNA, Chromosomes and Genes Week 2: How genes create proteins -> Protein Synthesis. Week 3: Intro to Mendelian Genetics - Understanding the history and beginning experiments. Monohybrid crosses and Pedigrees - Understanding the passing of traits. Week 4: Intro to Molecular Genetics - Understanding chromosomes Week 5: Investigating genetic conditions
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will understand how genes and traits are passed within a family.
Students will understand how mutations impact genes and traits.
Students will learn about specific genetic disorders that are both common and uncommon in today's world.
Standards:
MS-LS1-5. Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how environmental and genetic factors influence the growth of organisms.
MS-LS3-1. Develop and use a model to describe why structural changes to genes (mutations) located on chromosomes may affect proteins and may result in harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects to the structure and function of the organism.
MS-LS3-2. Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation.

Washington Certificado de Docencia en Ciencia
Hi learners and parents!
I currently am a credentialed teacher in Washington State and hold my endorsements in biology (5-12), health (K-12) and fitness (K-12).
I currently teach AP Biology, honors biology, anatomy and physiology and health science.
Last year, I taught biology, environmental science, health, physics and P.E. to middle and high school students.
I hold my Masters Degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in life sciences and health.
I received my Bachelors Degree in Athletic Training from Whitworth University. I completed 1,250 clinical hours in physical therapy clinics, collegiate, semi-professional and high school athletic training rooms, emergency rooms and urgent cares.
