Experiencia de clase

Some aquatic mammals such as whales and seals live in water that reaches icy cold temperatures. How do they stay warm? In this one-time class, we will practice the scientific method with a fun experiment on blubber! Learners will get to experience what it feels like to have a layer of blubber while exposed to cold temperatures (a bowl of ice water). Will you be able to tolerate having your hand submerged in ice water longer with a layer of blubber? I will discuss the scientific method step-by-step and together we will complete a worksheet as we work through the experiment. Learners will be introduced to the steps of the scientific method including materials, procedure, hypothesis, results, and conclusion and how they help us to test ideas and record and organize data.

Class Structure:
Minutes 0-5: Class rules, Introductions, Ice Breaker (pun intended!)
Minutes 6-20: Short lesson on aquatic animals that live in Arctic waters, introduction to scientific method
Minutes 21-35: Begin experiment; scientific method sheet will be filled out as we complete each step (learners that are not yet writing multiple sentences can dictate their answers to the teacher who will be filling out the sheet on the screen or to a nearby adult)
Minutes 36-40: Closing thoughts from the class/teacher

**SEE SUPPLY LIST BELOW!
Metas de aprendizaje

Lista de útiles escolares
A one-page handout will be sent prior to class to be used during the class. If you do not have access to a printer, this sheet can be easily duplicated on paper at home.

Materials needed for experiment:
-Bowl of ice water (large enough to submerge one hand under water)
-2 Latex gloves
-Petroleum jelly (vegetable shortening will work too, but is harder to work with)- enough to apply thick layer around hand
-Spatula for spreading petroleum jelly on glove

Hello! My name is Kelly Currier. I am a Registered Dietitian and former college athlete. I received a Bachelor’s of Science in Food Science and Nutrition (Clemson University, 2007) and a Master’s of Science in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology (University of Florida, 2010). I have worked with college athletes as a sports nutritionist (University of Florida 2008-2009; Florida State University, 2010). I later transitioned to working as a clinical dietitian in an acute care hospital (2013-2020). In this setting I worked with acute and chronically ill adults, assessing their nutrition status and offering appropriate nutrition treatment and education. I educated patients on appropriate nutrition for diabetes, cancer, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, obesity, Crohn's disease, and much more. I was also a Certified Nutrition Support Specialist (2015-2020) where I specialized in feeding patients that were not able to eat by mouth, managing their nutrition through non-oral routes (i.e. tube feeding).

I played competitive soccer up to age 21, including 4 years as a starter and 1 year as a captain at Clemson University. In my year as captain I helped lead our team to an Elite 8 appearance in the NCAA tournament. I have experience coaching youth soccer and training athletes as part of my post-collegiate career. I enjoy helping soccer players to improve their footwork and confidence on the ball, which can be done virtually as it requires little space!

I have 3 children that I recently began homeschooling. I am passionate about raising healthy eaters and teaching youth important foundational truths about nutrition. In a culture that celebrates fad diets, our children need a good foundational understanding of a well-balanced diet, intuitive eating, and positive body image.

I am also an avid gardener and proud owner of egg-laying chickens! I am doing my best to grow as much of my own food as possible.

I am eager to teach classes now as my career! I am not only an expert in nutrition and soccer, I am EXCITED to teach these subjects to the next generation!
