Assessment Description: The culmination of this course is the creation of a roller coaster path using the concepts learned throughout the class. Students will receive a detailed project description outlining requirements such as incorporating parent functions into a single piecewise defined function, specifying the minimum and maximum heights of the coaster, determining its length, and comparing it to real-world coasters (e.g., tallest or longest). Project Requirements and Scoring: Students will be provided with a scoring rubric to guide them in meeting project expectations and receiving constructive feedback. This rubric is designed to encourage thoroughness and creativity in their designs, regardless of whether they choose to create a digital or physical project at home. Presentation Day: To showcase their work, students will participate in a presentation day where they will present their roller coaster designs. This event will foster peer interaction, as students will have the opportunity to question their classmates about their designs and provide feedback. Assessment Role and Types: Assessments in this class are primarily project-based, focusing on applying mathematical concepts practically. The main assessment is the final roller coaster project, which integrates knowledge of piecewise functions, graphing skills using Desmos, and real-world comparisons. Students will have the flexibility to choose between digital or physical project formats. Frequency and Requirements: The final project is a required assessment for all students and will be completed outside of regular class hours. It allows students to demonstrate their understanding and creativity in applying mathematical principles to real-world scenarios. Feedback and critique provided through the scoring rubric and peer interactions during the presentation day will enhance learning and encourage iterative improvement in their designs. This structure ensures that assessments are meaningful, engaging, and aligned with the course objectives, promoting both individual achievement and collaborative learning experiences.

Welcome to the Roller Coaster Math Camp! In this course, students will embark on an exciting journey to design their own roller coasters using piecewise functions.gress.

Class Structure:
This course follows a structured approach similar to a traditional classroom setting. Each session may include a warm-up, introduction of new concepts, guided practice, and opportunities for students to present their work. Guided notes will be provided, and students are encouraged to print them for interactive learning experiences.

Teaching Style:
I believe in active learning through problem-solving and exploration. Students will actively engage in writing, solving math problems, and graphing functions, emphasizing practical application over relying solely on calculators or online tools.

Interactivity:
Students will interact with me through Zoom sessions, where they can participate in lectures, group discussions, and Q&A sessions. I will use instructional videos, slides, and live demonstrations to enhance learning. Assignments and projects will encourage creativity and critical thinking.

Prerequisites:
Students should have completed Algebra 1 or Integrated Math 1 and be familiar with identifying the domain and range of functions using interval or inequality notation. No prior experience with Desmos is required, but students should be ready to apply mathematical concepts creatively.

Outcome:
By the end of this camp, students will have gained practical experience in using piecewise functions to design roller coasters. This hands-on project-based learning experience can be highlighted on college applications to demonstrate their mathematical skills and creativity.

Join me for a thrilling adventure in Roller Coaster Math Camp, where we turn algebra into adrenaline!
Metas de aprendizaje
They will understand how to define separate functions for different segments of the roller coaster ride based on height restrictions, speed variations, and design preferences.
Mastering Piecewise Functions: Students will learn to create and manipulate piecewise functions to design roller coaster paths.

Orientación para padres
We will be using Desmos, a widely used graphing calculator, for visualizing and designing roller coaster paths digitally. Desmos is accessible via web browser and does not require an account for basic usage. Students will learn how to utilize Desmos to graph piecewise functions and simulate roller coaster designs. If you have any concerns or questions regarding the course content or tools used, please feel free to reach out for clarification.

Hi, I am a NC native and High School Math teacher. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics. I taught for 2 years in the United Arab Emirates at American Curriculum private schools. It was a wonderful experience. I am in my 5th year teaching high school math in NC. I've taught in the honors program and have IB MYP experience. My philosophy is take it slow and keep it simple. I like shopping for makeup and video games. Holla!
