Let's start with a note about gender. This class is open to all! We welcome you, your insight, and your opinions. You don't have to identify as a female to be a feminist!

In this class we will explore notable women who have changed the world with their tenacity, intellect, and bravery. But really that’s just the tip of the iceberg. We’ll be learning about major historical events, social and political change, geography, and global cultures throughout history. The accomplishments of our rebel girls will set the stage for an incredible journey of women throughout history.

For example, we’ll learn about Harriett Tubman and her work on the underground railroad, but we’ll also explore Quaker culture and their efforts to aid in the abolishment of slavery. We’ll also learn about “freedom quilts” and how they were used to guide freedom seekers. Fast forward to present day and we’ll learn about Malala Yousafzai. Our focus will go beyond the fast facts about Malala and focus on her tireless efforts to assist refugees around the world today. We’ll learn how someone becomes a refugee and about the life and death decisions refugees are forced to make under unbelievable circumstances.

This class will involve presentation, video, and lots of group discussion. The women of 2024 stand on the shoulders of some fierce rebel girls. This class is the tip of the iceberg in honoring them.

Other women we’ll cover in class are: Rosie the Riveter (as a collective), Harriet Tubman, Ruby Bridges, Irena Sendlerowa, Phyllis Latour Doyle, Nelly Bly, Amelia Earhart, suffragettes (as a collective), Oprah, Ella Fitzgerald, Lucille Ball, Frida Kahlo, Julia Child, and Misty Copeland.

My classes are largely discussion based and require learning engagement and interaction. I require cameras to be on throughout class. If extenuating circumstances prevent a learner from turning their camera on, please send me a message to discuss it prior to enrolling.

Parent may request evaluation feedback on learner participation and demonstration of understanding. These points will be evaluated through class participation.

Orientación para padres
The road to notoriety is not always a smooth one. We will touch on some delicate subjects and time periods with people like Ruby Bridges and Irena Sendlerowa (to name a few). I have children in this age category and will use my best judgement to keep it age appropriate, yet informative.

Fair warning.... if you get me started talking about women's history, the invasion of Normandy, leaders like Churchill, or propaganda (to name a few) you could be here a while! I wasn't always a history buff. To be honest, in school I found it unrelatable and a bit dull. But as an adult, I fell in love. It is my goal to make a love of history positively contagious for young learners. We can do this by learning about historical figures in unconventional ways and bring them to life!

This class is very loosely based on the Goodnight Stores for Rebel Girls books. However, we'll go so much deeper! We won't skim over the life of Irena Sendler. We'll dig in! What was the Warsaw Ghetto? How did Europe reach this unfathomable point? What were the risks she faced? How did she achieve the impossible?

I have lived and breathed historical studies for nearly 20 years now and can't wait to share a taste of how women have shaped this world with your young learners!
