Experiencia de clase

This class is for kids with learning differences who need low reading level high interest books to develop reading fluency and comprehension.  In "The Last Kids on Earth and the Zombie Parade" by Max Brallier students will continue to follow the adventures of Jack Sullivan and his friends as they navigate a world overturned by zombies and monsters. Students will read six short chapters  of this accessible chapter book in between sessions.  Students will respond to what they read using graphic organizers and class discussion to support writing development and comprehension.  Throughout the class, students will also have the opportunity to reflect on their own lives, challenges, and successes.

Day 1: 

Opening: Introduce yourself and share what you know about the Last Kids on Earth book or Netflix show.

Reading Kickoff: The teacher will read chapters 1-3 to engage students and get them excited about the book.

Focus for Discussion:

Homework: Read Ch 4-9 and do a reflection sheet.

Day 2:  Friends and Allies

Opening:  What could you find in the mall that would be useful if you were the last kid on earth?  What would you pick up just for fun?

Share homework reflections.

Focus for Discussion: Who are the new friends and allies that are introduced in the book?  Where do they come from?   Should the kids join forces with them or keep monster fighting on their own?

Activity:  Start your "Besitary" by drawing and describing four monsters mentioned in this book or the last book.

Kahoot: Ch 1-9

Homework: Read Ch 10-15  and do a reflection sheet.


Day 3: The Zombie Parade and What's at Stake?

Opening:  Who are the people you would want to be with in a zombie apocalypse?

Share homework reflections:

Focus for Discussion:   Do  you think that Jack is right to want to protect his friends by battling monsters alone?  How would they feel if they knew he thought that?  How would you feel?

Activity: Use a Venn Diagram to compare Jack and his friends to the monster hunting monsters.  Add to your bestiary if you wish.

Kahoot: Ch 10-15

Homework: Read Ch 16-21 and do a reflection sheet.

Day 4: Ethics and Zombie Traps

Opening: What would you do to get ready for a stake out?  What would you bring?  

Share homework reflections: 

Focus for Discussion:  What do we think about the idea of using zombies as bait?  Zombies used to be humans and Jack and his friends have vowed not to kill them. Are they doing the right thing building zombie traps?  Why or why not?

Activity:  Design your own Zombie Trap and explain why it works.  Add to the bestiary if you wish.

Kahoot:  Ch 16-21

Homework: Read Ch 22-27 and do a reflection sheet.


Day 5: Stereotypes and Preconceptions

Opening:  Can people change?  Describe how you have changed over the past few years.

Share homework reflections: 

Focus for Discussion:  What have we learned about Dirk in this book so far? What are Jack's stereotypes about Dirk?  How does Dirk contradict those stereotypes?

Kahoot: 22-27

Activity:  Make a visual character profile for Dirk based on what you know about him or write a graphic novel page starring Dirk.
 
Homework: Read Ch 28-33, Do a reflection sheet.

Day 6:  Predictions

Opening: Share a time when you worked as part of a team.  What did you find fun and challenging about that experience?

Share Homework Reflections: 

Focus for Discussion:  Who are some important members of the Lask Kids on Earth team and the Pizza Place Monster group team?  What are some of the things that individual members contributed to defeating Rezzoch and banishing Thrull?

Kahoot: Ch 28-33

Activity:  Make a yearbook page sharing some of your favorite characters from the Last Kids on Earth Zombie Parade

If there is time:  Make predictions about what will happen next.

Students will gain fluency and comprehension by reading and discussing the novel.  Students will practice organizing and communicating their ideas using graphic organizers, creative writing, and other strategies.

This book deals with zombies, monsters, and a fictional apocalypse in a light hearted manner. The main character sometimes tends to stereotype which will be addressed in the book. "The Last Kids On Earth and the Zombie Parade" by Max Brallier is required for this class.  Students may use e-books, hardcopy and paperbacks, or audiobooks to read and comprehend the text.

Handouts will be uploaded in into the Outschool classroom before many sessions.

Paper, markers or colored pencils, and pens or pencils are great to have on hand for class activities.

Bridget Smith is a teacher and parent with ADHD.  Her focus on Outschool is supporting students with ADHD, other neurodiverse learners, and  students with learning differences.  She has taught over 1000 learners, including  neurodiverse teens, with ADHD and other learning differences here on Outschool.  She is a credentialed teacher who has taught preschoolers through adult learners.  Bridget is credentialed by the State of California to teach K-12 Students.
