***Schedule note: This is a 6-session class normally scheduled for 6 weeks. During the summer of 2021, a twice-a-week for 3 weeks option is also scheduled so make sure you look at the dates for the option you want to sign up for.***

Recorder is an affordable and portable *real* instrument that can play many styles of music. It's also a great preparation for playing other instruments like flute, clarinet, saxophone and more.

In this class all aspects of playing the recorder will be introduced to beginners: stream of air, body and hand position, using the tongue to start notes, reading the rhythms and notes in our music, and practice tips.

Class time will be a mixture of interactive activities including group playing (you may be on mute some of the time so I can hear individuals play), call and response playing games where the teacher plays something and students listen and play it back, 'thumbs up, thumbs down' games where students get to identify mistakes that the teacher makes, breathing warmups and exercises, and writing or coloring clues in our music.

No prior knowledge is needed; basic reading ability to read the titles of the songs and some other labels in the music is helpful.

Exact content covered will vary based on overall student need, but will somewhat follow this schedule:
Week 1- Posture, air stream, tonguing, playing and reading notes G, A and B, practice tips
Week 2- More advanced songs with G, A and B (possibly playing note C, E and/or D by ear)
Week 3- Reading and playing songs with new note E
Week 4- Reading and playing songs with new note D
Week 5- Playing songs (by ear or reading the music) with all our notes
Week 6- Review our favorite songs or learning ones that were skipped over earlier, tips for continued learning and practice on your own

Please see materials list for instrument information and the book that is required.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn how to perform songs using B, A, G, E, and D on the recorder. In those songs we will learn about quarter notes, half notes, quarter rests, time signatures and measures.

Lista de útiles escolares
Each student will need to have their own "Baroque" (not German) fingering recorder. Yamaha or Aulos are reliable quality brands for beginners and many other brands are fine as well. They are available from music stores and online.

If your family already owns a recorder here is how to tell if it is Baroque or German fingering: a German-fingering recorder has hole five (counting from the top) which is smaller than hole four, whereas Baroque recorders have hole four which is smaller than hole five.

Please also purchase your own copy of The New Nine-Note Recorder Method, by Penny Gardner (~$25, or used copies are available online for less). More than one learner in the same household may share the same book.

Highlighters or colored pencils in the colors blue, orange, green and yellow may be needed.
Recursos externos
Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Hello, My name is Mrs. VW.

I teach music and other classes on Outschool.

I have experience teaching orchestra, band, choir and general music in school classrooms and for private groups such as home school and fine arts organizations. I have over 15 years of experience teaching private instrument lessons, mainly string instruments and piano.

Our world is full of beauty and I love helping others tune in to notice, create and share beautiful things.

When I'm not teaching or creating music, I enjoy reading and learning new things!

Note:
If you are thinking of purchasing a string instrument in preparation for a class, you are welcome to message me about good quality but still affordable recommendations. Buying a too-cheap and poorly made 'violin shaped object' off Amazon or other sellers can result in frustrations with an instrument that breaks, is hard to tune, hard to play etc.
