Help! I found a pirate ship and climbed aboard to find treasure... but it's not abandoned like I thought and now I'm trapped inside! Can you help me escape before the pirates find me? In this 25 minute lesson, learners will solve puzzles, look for clues and separate fact from fiction as we learn all about real life pirates. We’ll answer the questions: - What did it mean to "sail the 7 seas?" - How did the Jolly Roger become the flag of pirates? - How did pirate ships communicate before phones or radios? - Did Long John Silver, Blackbeard or Captain Jack Sparrow ever really live? - What kinds of treasure were pirates after? Using logic and teamwork to solve puzzles, break codes and search for clues, we’ll race to escape before the pirates return… and hopefully bring some of that treasure with us. This is a highly interactive lesson requiring critical thinking skills, teamwork and problem solving while exploring the world of pirates. Credits: - a clip from National Geographic's video on pirate myths will be shown in class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3fztn2roaw&t=63s - This cover has been designed using resources from freepik.com

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Hello, my name is Kirsten and I live in the Canadian prairies where I love canoeing in our beautiful wilderness, reading science fiction novels and playing board games with my family!
I have been involved in education for over 15 years in North America and the UK in both classroom and non-profit settings. I have a Bachelor's of Art in Youth Leadership with a focus on child development and use my background as a camp director, community outreach youth programming director and curriculum developer to transition to small group and digital learning over the past two years. I love "gamifying" learning and making studies fun! My specialties are in problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork and leadership skills. I value group learning experiences where children are participants, not just listeners and want to make learning something to get excited about!
POLICIES
--Communication--
I do not check my email while teaching classes, which means I often cannot respond to last-minute requests. My goal is to respond within 24 hours during weekdays, or Monday mornings following the weekend.
--Transfers and Refunds--
Generally, I am more than happy to accommodate transfers within 24 hours of class time. If there are extenuating circumstances, do let me know as I understand that sometimes life throws you a curve ball. Enrolled students who do not make it to class are invited to request a video link to view the missed class.
--Video--
As per Outschool policy, I require all learners to do a live check-in with video on at least once during each class. I strongly encourage videos to remain on in class, but learners are free to turn their videos off after their check-in.
