Often time in schools, teachers will give a weekly list of "sight words" for students to memorize based off of the Dolch list. The 100 most frequently used high-frequency words, often called sight words, make up 50% of all text! Being able to read and spell these words are essential! However, the best way to tackle these high-frequency words IS NOT TO MEMORIZE THEM!!! Research shows that the fastest and most effective way to develop the strong readings areas of the brain is to teach letter-sound relationships and encourage students to sound out words. Even irregular words! Each class will have a short mini lesson focusing on one or two phonemic concepts. Together we will read, write, and practice the list of words that follow the pattern. Each class will incorporate a multi-sensory approach with students doing more than just reading words on a screen. Once class is over, the list of words will be posted for your student to be able to continue to practicing independently! 8/16- Words with "s" (makes both the /s/ and /z/ sound) 8/23- Words with "th" (voiced and unvoiced) 8/30- Words with "ee" 9/6- Words with "er" 9/13- Review and practice "s", "th", "ee", "er" 9/20- Words with "ar" 9/27- Words with "ng" 10/4- Words with "ck" 10/11- Words with "ll" 10/18- Review and practice "ar", "ng", "ck", "ll" 10/25- Words with "ay" and "ai" 11/1- Long vowel sounds at the end of a syllable (He, So, later) 11/8- Words with schwa sounds 11/15- Words with schwa sounds (extended) 11/22- No Class- Thanksgiving Holiday 11/29- Review and practice "ay", "ai", Long vowels at the end of syllables, and schwa sounds 12/6- Broad sounds "a" 12/13- Broad sounds "o" 12/20- no class 12/27- no class Will Continue into January..... This class is aligned with the science of reading. Please make sure your child has mastered the 26 common sounds for each letter in the alphabet (short vowels) and are able to blend sounds heard orally to make words. Our focus is on word recognition through developing strong phonemic awareness and decoding strategies.
